New 326hp VW ID 3 GTX on sale this week

Rear-drive, 326hp, up to 369 miles - and only £5k more than a Golf GTI

It would be entirely reasonable not to be all that excited about another VW GTX, given the fairly tepid ID 4 and 5 - plus what looks like a very plain ID 7. None have yet really offered much beyond the regular EV offerings to justify their top-of-the-range status, but now the ID 3 GTX looks like it could change things a tad. It has more power at 326hp than the 299hp SUVs, rear-drive instead of all-wheel drive, and it finally fulfills a 2021 promise from VW to make a performance derivative of the smallest ID. They wouldn’t have waited all this time, and launched all the others first, for this not to be decent - would they? VW even goes as far as to say that this ID 3 is an ‘electric counterpart to the Golf GTI Clubsport’. Quite the claim

It’ll cost a little more than the Golf, however, at £46,225 (the GTI is from £41,655). That’s been confirmed today, with orders open from Wednesday and 74-plated GTXs set to be on the road soon. For that money, the standard kit includes 20-inch wheels, sports suspension with DCC dampers, a GTX-specific front bumper, a Harman Kardon stereo and augmented reality head-up display. There’s no word yet on options (expect it on the configurator in a couple of days), though with sports seats, a GTX’d interior and metallic paint included, there likely won’t be much to add.

Given its spec similarities to the Born VZ, it should come as little surprise to find that its quoted performance largely mirrors the Cupra. VW claims 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds (or just a tenth behind the Golf), though obviously top speed won’t quite compare - expect 124mph. Range is rated at 369 miles on the WLTP combined cycle, with the 79kWh battery boasting 185kW charging capability.

Kai Grünitz, VW’s board member for tech development, said of the GTX and the Golf: “Of course, an electric drive and a turbocharged petrol engine each have their own unique character. Yet the ID.3 GTX Performance and the Golf GTI Clubsport share the same fascinating lightness when they accelerate. Volkswagen is transferring the almost 50-year tradition of its compact GT models into the world of electric mobility. Driving pleasure is guaranteed.” It would be better late than never for a great GTX - expect a first drive verdict in the coming weeks.

326 bhp, RWD and sub 2000Kg's? With 369 WLTP so real world 320 - 330, dependant on use?

I'd say that was alright (for an EV). Really looking forward to when the gets us to 400 miles WLTP and sub 1800Kg's

Why does weight matter?
No one getting this car is commuting via the Nürburgring

369 WLTP will still be <300 in the real World, especially winter time.

Not a bad effort except for the price and looks.

This could be the next contender for the biggest ever Carwow discount - £15-20k off and 0%finance? I still wouldn’t.

As with all these hot hatch aping EV’s I’m quietly pleased that it allows more options for rear drive purchases. Drive train these days makes little difference. Identikit 4 pot 2 litre turbos are fine don’t get me wrong but I’d prefer the rear drive balance if it’s nicely done. I’ll let them develop a little while before I take the plunge though. I’ll be buying used so need to be patient.

Because heavy cars are worse to drive than light ones, and VW themselves are comparing it to a sporty version of the Golf.

If you think weight doesn't matter, you're very much on the wrong website.

If anyone get get the official 0-60 of any FWD hot hatch they are doing well - this will happily show a GTi a clean pair of mudguards over and over again no doubt - still wouldn't make me want one mind

Lose 10k from the price, and allow purchasers to spec a body coloured boot (instead of the crappy black boot) and it will sell.

At 46k, no chance.

Which one is non-blob shaped? That's the one thing the Golf 8 has been repeatedly called.

MG4 xpower makes this (and the entire ID3 range) look very expensive.

The problem on this forum is people judge weight without even driving the cars. They read a weight number and start wetting themselves blabla

People moaned about the weight of the BMW M2, the BMW M5, etc.... then Chris Harris, Henry Catchpole, Joe Achilles, and many more competent drivers test them, on track and public roads, and their feedback is the weight isn't an issue.

What's the point of a heavy & supposedly fast EVv sports car?
So you can get to a rest area charging point faster, to enjoy a meal whilst waiting?

Give me an ICE car with character any day, none of this gee-whizz EV crap that'll be worth half the money in a year or two.

I think the novelty has worn off for most would-be buyers; EV sales are nose diving, apparently.

Save yourself £2k and get the Cupra Born VZ. Same drivetrain, better looks and handles much better. Oh and a better interior.
