Passat estate insurance at 17

Evening you lot!
I've bought a van for work, so my wife gets my car and her 10 plate Passat estate 2.0tdi 140 is left over.
I looked at selling it but with 200k it's worth bugger all but we've had it 10 years so know it's history and it's been looked after.
My daughter is 16 and we had the thought of giving it to her rather than spending a load of money on a poverty spec Citroen C1 to get a low insurance group.
I've tried to get approx quotes but to no avail as she's not 17 and they want a driver's license number so can't just fudge the DOB.

Have any of you lot insured a Passat as a first car and what sort of money was it?

I can't imagine it being a popular choice for the boy racers so was hoping that the prices wouldn't be too stupid.

You may be surprised it might not be too much.


3.5k or so is infinitely better value than buying another car and then having to pay through the nose to insure it.

An old Passat is also much safer than an old C1

To be honest I'd be happier with her in a bigger car as there is a lot more metal around her than a plastic C1 if the worst was to happen.

For that spec Passat, quotes would likely be a fair bit less than a C1 or similar which get categorised as "usual" young driver vehicles.

When she gets a Provisional, the insurance will be low compared to when she passes her test but you can mitigate this a bit by putting yourself down as a secondary driver.
