OK, One of the family (or the insurance provider) has done something daft.

Car Insurance was due to (We thought) auto-renew last night, but it hasn't!

So as of now, the car is not insured (it is taxed; VED has been paid).

Obviously they have no intention of using it un-insured so will use one of the other cars (so I will probably be getting their shopping for the next few days; while we sort this out).

Is there any penalty for an uninsured car on private land? (To be clear the VED is paid)

You’re supposed to SORN it even if it isn’t on the road

If it's taxed it has to be insured. Continuous Insurance Enforcement was introduced in 2011.

What is the consequence? It expired last night, and I am trying to sort out them insurance starting today online.

I am trying to sort their insurance for them now, this is going to cost them, the insurer was quoting £50 less than the quotes I can get today!

They thought it was going to auto-renew, there is no sign of an email, credit card charge, and the policy is showing as lapsed on-line!

Realistically for a few days gap there won’t be a consequence.

You'll be fine, it takes a while for anything to come through. I've changed number plates and forgot to tell insurance and it's taken a few months before the DVLA have written to say it wasn't insured, quick phone call and sorted.

Just go online and SORN it, you'll be fine.

Thanks all, It is looking like by the time they get cashback etc it will be about £25 more expensive this year that the renewal they were expecting to auto-renew. Not sure what went wrong, but that is for later in week (I am guessing that will be a very expensive tick box last year).

The insurer has no phone lines today, or they would have sorted it out then on the phone, now it looks like they will have to buy it from a different insurer. The funny thing is this is the ideal person to have on your books, driving for decades, never had an accident.

The worrying thing was if I hadn't suggested checking it on-line, they would have been driving round un-insured until they realised, the provider did not email they telling them the policy lapsed!

You’re supposed to SORN it even if it isn’t on the road
I suppose, that wouldn't apply as it is taxed?, but it appears that changed in 2011 from the above replies.

It is in the garage at their house at the moment, and there it will stay until I can get them another policy sorted!

Why the delay? Just insure it today online. Otherwise SORN it.

I would just phone the previous insurer first thing tomorrow and see if they will assume cover at the invited renewal premium.

The fact that you are having to do all this for a family member makes me wonder if they didn't read the renewal invitation.

I'm on auto renewal; I get an invitation about a month ahead then an email just before renewal reminding me that it will auto renew unless I cancel.

Another policy, not on auto renew, sends me paper renewal about a month ahead and makes it perfectly clear that I have to instruct them and pay before expiry.

I think you may need to keep them under your wing in the future

Is the quote you obtained not still valid?

It would have been on your renewal invitation, whether it auto renewed, or not..

it does seem like the OP is trying to blame the broker, it is clear as day if you're on renewal or not on a policy and the renewal letter/email tells you so at the time.

As for keeping it garaged with no insurance, I did this a few weeks ago, bought a car, set up insurance, paid the VED, only then I realised insurance didn't kick in until the following weekend as on the quote before viewing it I put that date, but bought it on the spot and the seller drove it back for me as it was local, so it stayed garaged for a week until policy started.

But as you have to back date your VED to the start of the month it was taxed so no need to SORN it.

I made the same mistake thinking the policy was going to auto renew whilst I was on holiday. When I got home I found the money had not been taken and whilst Privilege had me as ‘auto renew’ I had to go online to action it! So it’s not auto renew then is it?

The kick in the teeth was I had to apply for another policy which came out at over £100 more than the renewal - they wouldn’t let me have the renewal price because the policy had lapsed and there was no number to call anyone to see if they would flex. I ended up going somewhere else but when you’re trying to insure the car for next day you get kicked in the balls because they know it’s ‘urgent’ and charge you for it! Ended up paying £50 more than renewal price rolleyes

Sounds daft, but if the VED is paid (i.e. not declared SORN) then you should insure it. There's no legal reason for you to NEED insurance on a car kept on private land and not used, but if the tax is paid the government assumption is that you're driving it and therefore will ping you for no insurance.

If you genuinely aren't using the car, then save your VED pennies, declare the car SORN and there's no need to insure it.

Of course, you may want to insure it incase someone nicks your SORNed car off your drive, etc, but that's your business. It's not a legal requirement.

Dear me, if cars parked on private land have to be insured, there must be lots of ‘ illegals’ around. Stroll through the local farm or small holding, anyone?

No, if the car is parked off road and has VED then legally it has to be Insured. If the car is off the road and SORN then it needs no insurance.
For the record you can also have a SORN vehcile off the road and still insured shoudl you need it and can afford it (classic cars etc but then most of them it is free to tax a vehicle)

Why would those cars be taxed?
