Where to get laser cutting & CNC work done

Hi all,

Looking to build one of these for my wife.






It's an 'open source' adaptive hand cycle project - the 3d model and files are available online for download.

It's called Project Mjolnir - apparently the name of Thors Hammer....

I have the files/model and have downloaded Fusion so I can view the model etc. Doesn't look too complicated and all the normal bike parts I can source.



Just need to find somewhere that can produce the metal work from the STEP files.


Anyone ever off-shored laser cutting & CNC machining work?

Does it generally work out cheaper than UK manufacturer?

Not too fussed about turnaround time as this will be a slow build as and when funds allow - the mid-drive motor unit will be a fair chunk of cash.

So, any recommendations for places to try for pricing?

There was a post recently where the guy got someone in china i think to produce something like an engine mount or something like that and shipped within a few days.

From memory it was the moon mileage alpina post, might be worth finding that and having a conversation with the guy.

I've used Andover Laser a few times and found their pricing really competitive for small volume stuff. All of the big name/offshore sites I found were great if you were getting 20+ of the same thing, but really expensive for low volumes.

Their online quote thing is a bit quirky as it doesn't include postage, so you place the order and they send you a quote with postage included. But each time they just charged me the quite reasonable royal mail charge.

I've had both aluminium and mild steel CNC cut from stuff I designed in Fusion and been really happy with the quality.

I know this is going to sound a bit snotty but the UK has a great metal fabrication sector, they are generally well priced and I would highly recommend using them. Have you explored all options here?

These guys in Buckingham are excellent: http://www.stratfordtools.co.uk/ I use them for laser cut parts and some fabrication.
Twin engineering in Bletchley do more general fabrication and are very good too.

There are others I can suggest.
I have used them and others for years.
