Insurance - £80 for windscreen cover

It's that time of year again!

Can't say I have previously noticed premium quotes with and without windscreen cover before. Is this new or am I just unobservant?

Many insurers also ask if you have claimed for windscreens in the quote process now too. Although it doesn’t affect your no claims, they want to know.

With the cost of screens, plus £2-300 to calibrate the cameras for the safety systems afterwards they are an expensive item now.

The calibration - or recalibration - is interesting. Firms are charging around that to tick the box, but there are just too many aftermarket screens that will not allow recal. An OE part is then fitted and quite often, there is nothing to do; it works just fine.

In any case, theses devices are self-calibrating by design.

Hearing more and more of it in recent months; some aren't realising they're not covered until they're in a claim scenario.

be sure to check what would happen in the event of a windscreen claim should you opt for it. You'll get quite a generic response, like, 'you are covered' but they don't always give a fuller answer which states whether cover would be subject to using their nominated repairer, who might - more than likely will - use aftermarket parts 'not commissioned by the car manufacturer'.

I get it all the time and frankly it winds me up. I get told windscreen claims are unlimited as long as you use [X]. When I ask for an alternate, the computer says no, so I ask for that cover to be removed as I will never make a claim (I always fit my own glass) but again, computer says no.

It'll be interesting if windscreen cover now has a value on some policies. The bummer for me is that my van is insured by an underwriter who owns Auto Windscreens. It wasn't the cheapest quote, but it was brokered by A-Plan (now known as Howden) and I've been with them for quite some time because they have specific cover for modified vans.

Nearly picked an insurers 'essential' policy until I saw it didn't include any windscreen cover.
After checking with my main dealer - windscreen £1154.09, fitting, 2 hours equaling £450 - I went for a different policy!
