Selling with private plate

Hi, seen a few posts about this but not about this exact scenario.

I just agreed a sale on my car with a private reg. The new owner wants to put his own plate on it.

Am I better off putting mine on retention now - but the v5 will still show the private reg until the new v5 is sent to me. Or, sell the car to him with the agreement that we will sort it after? I didn’t know if there was a simple way to do this without having to have the car go from my reg, back to original reg, then to his reg?

Do it now online yourself, the retention is instant and the V5 should take less than a week.
You risk losing your reg if you use any sort of agreement.

If less than a week that would work but saw dvla say 4-6 weeks.
And then put it back on original plate when he collects?

I did one of mine last week. Retention online done immediately,New V5 and Retention document back in the post in four days.

You’re going to have to do this regardless of when you do it. Can’t go straight from your reg to his if you want to keep yours.

The risk of not transferring first is that he’ll slap his straight on, at which point yours is probably gone forever.

ETA: and even if he does let you take it off later, the paperwork will all be in his name (and he’d be able to apply for a new certificate if he later turned out to be a bad ‘un).

My average time for receipt of new log book is three days. It's very quick now when updated online.

Don't do this unless you want to risk losing the plate forever. As others have said do the retention online and wait for the new V5C.

You will have to get plates made too unless you have the originals (assuming your private plate was not on from brand new).

Yeh have the old ones in the garage, thankfully - will go dig them out

I have six or seven private plates on various things and I move them around for EU use quite a bit. They have never once taken more than three working days - it's all automated.

My mate lost his private plate by seeling and leaving it on, guy never swapped it off, ignored texts etc and went to ground.
It wasn't massively expensive but still another £500 the guy got for the sake of just changing on DVLA

Shame people act like this, the last car I purchased privately had a private plate on it. Unfortunately the previous owner had not removed it prior to sale and it couldn’t be done online as there are a load of rules on when the log book was last issued and the vehicle taxed etc.. As part of the deal he trusted me to place it on retention gifting it to him once I received the V5 in my name, I did this, keeping him updated on whatsapp and also posted his old plates back.. Personally I would be been expecting a knock on the door if I hadn’t kept to my side of the deal..
