Fed up with my car, cars in general or everything

I'm sorting out a few little jobs on my car, its got a few imperfections but generally its a very tidy older car which I've always wanted and owned for 5 years.

Now I've started the work I've got a really cant be arsed feeling which really isn't me along with a decline in my standards of work I deem acceptable. All my life I've been a perfectionist but now I just couldn't care less.

I cant figure out if I'm bored with the car and i don't know what would replace it anyway and everything i look at is meh. Maybe indeed a break and another hobby or I'm depressed.

Anyone else had similar? Cars and bikes have been my hobbies for 25 years and want the excitement and fun back.

It comes and goes for me. Being a ‘car enthusiast’ doesn’t have to be a full time job.

Cars are just things. And you won’t hurt their feeling if you can’t be ar**d for a while.

People change. I used to be obsessed with cars, driving, buying and selling them. Yet I’ve pretty much lost interest. A lot of that is circumstance (plus I’ve got back into riding bikes).

However, it is also possible that you are depressed. That would impact a lot more than just your car hobby though.

I guess the question is, are there other aspects of your life (work, family, friends, other hobbies) that you still feel enthusiastic about? If so then it's just a loss of interest in cars which may just be a healthy change as your life progresses. If there's nothing that you care about any more, that would be more concerning.

I thought that getting bored of stuff and everything feeling "meh" was just a sign of getting older. I put off working on my car for weeks or even months if it wasn't urgent.

Turns out I was just slowly becoming mildly depressed. It sneaks up on you sometimes.

2 career changes and a move across the country later and I'm sometimes positively excited to work on my car . Music sounds better, films are better, and sometimes I actually look forward to things!

Not so much when it's 7 degrees, raining sideways and the job in question is dislodging a rusted 25 year old suspension nut, but then, when's that ever been enjoyable?

It's a car you've always wanted, so your lack of interest suggests the car/work needed aren't the problem.

Which sounds like depression to me.

Is there anything that does get you excited? If so do more of that.

Falling out of love with cars does not mean you’re depressed. I mean it might be a sign, but there would be other signs too.

I think it’s often part of growing up. I still like cars in the sense I enjoy watching racing, enjoy going to car meets with my son, can appreciate seeing an interesting or exotic car at the petrol station, enjoy consuming various car media, But now I’m older with kids, I’ve got very little inclination to spend time/money on my own car beyond what I need to. I also have a certain amount of climate guilt, as I do quite Significant commute in a 12 year old GTi. If/when I replace it, I can’t see it being with anything particularly interesting.

Contrast that with 20-something me and spending money on cars was about the only thing I wanted to spend money on, my next car always needed to be faster, more powerful etc than the last.

Low testosterone, I’m not even kidding. I was feeling the same as you. Lost drive and enthusiasm.

Since going on trt, I’m no longer becoming a grumpy old man (51 btw, don’t know your age) aches and pains massively reduced, energy levels way up, positivity and enthusiasm way up! Just happier, friendlier, more outgoing.

The friends around me who are on it are like me, those who aren’t on it are becoming the classic “grumpy old man”

Weirdly dance music sounds great too.

I’m sure I’ll get torn apart for this, but I don’t care, women address their hormones, and before you call me a woman, not with my test level mate.
