Garage won't send quotes or work on my car-HELP!

Long story made as short as possible, but Im having to be vague at the moment (not sure who is on here!)
Car broke down, local garage was about to look at it. But while waiting I asked a more southern specialist about it. They said don't let just anyone look at the car. Went with the specialist, broke car down to them. It's been months, so work to find the issue has been done, no money has changed hands yet, but for weeks ive been asking to get a quote so I know what it will cost, but nothing.
Im now at the point as I can't go there, is my car even there anymore, is the specialist just dodging me, has the car been broken for parts (all the worst possibilities are running through my head.....)
But what can I do? Where do I stand, what pressure can be put on them to at least give me an idea of costs, (I need to know if it's even financially viable fix).

Is the car a Porsche? And has the garage kept it for eleven years?

What's the issue with it breaking down, mechanical, engine / gearbox, electrical?
No 'specialist' should need a car for months to diagnose an issue.
Something not just right.
Final telephone call. What have you done to the car, what is wrong with it, how much is it going to cost to fix?
No reasonable answer, then get it collected and taken somewhere else.

Thanks for thee replies. Can't say much, but large engine fault. Has done some exploratory work. But agree, even if you do get the idea of cost to fix and go ahead, how many months will that take!
Unfortunately I don't have a car with a trailer, and I have plainly said if you're too busy and don't want to do it just tell me and I'll get it picked up. Not sure if it's just one person or just very bad time management.

What a palava!! It looks as if these guys are hopeless, arrange to have the car removed, take it to someone else and start again. This is going to cost you, just put it all down to experience.
Two things? If they have dismantled part of the engine you will probably have to pay some labour costs.
Due to all the hassle and delay I don’t see why you should though. Make sure it’s just a nominal sum.

Reading between the lines here, exploratory work on a blown engine is likely head/sump off and ancillaries in the boot. Diagnosis of new expensive parts and significant labour costs to repair. I would want assurances that the work is authorised and the bill will be paid before I would start work.
You need to talk to them in person and assure them if they do the work you will pay the bill, but you want your car back asap.

Sounds like a communication breakdown and perhaps your own expectations not being managed effectively.

So they have "worked" (thread title says they won't work "work) on the car and need paying for the diagnoses phase of the work. The quote part should follow the strip down diagnoses, along with timeframes i.e. parts might be out of stock or on a long lead time. All of that needs communicating to you.
We don't know much about the situation, however could it be that the value of the car might make the repair not viable and the garage wants paying for the work done so far so beofre proceeding?

I don't understand why you can't go there. Does the garage owner have a large aggressive dog or something like that?If the garage is some distance away and you don't have another car, there are trains, buses, taxis and even hire cars if you need one.
The only way to find out what is going on is to go there. Phone in advance and ask specifically whether or not they are going to be able to fix the car. If they say yes say you are going to come down to discuss the job, costs etc. with them. If they say no, arrange for a recovery firm to collect the car and go there at the same time to make sure the recovery firm collect all the bits.
I suspect what has happened is that the garage have discovered it's going to be really awkward/massive job and don't want the work (or don't know how to fix it), but don't want to admit that to you either. Because you're some distance away, the path of least resistance for them is to stuff the car at the back of the yard and hope you'll eventually come and collect it.
If they've not done any work for several months, and haven't specifically said this is because they are waiting on a particular part, you just need to get the car back from them and try somewhere else.
