UK Based - Getting Repairs in Belgium

Am I missing anything if I plan to do this -

UK based.

Buy a brand new gearbox and trailer the car (with broken gearbox) to Belgium.

A company who I trust and prefer fits the new gearbox and I return to the UK, this time again trailering the car with the defunct gearbox (now separate).

Are there any issues with duty or anything else?

Probably not as you aren’t registering it but I am not sure. Just thinking that plenty of motorhomes go over every year with a Nissan Micra attached to the back for them to use and can’t think it would be difficult or they wouldn’t do it?

I might be wrong though.

I think you may be wrong, motorhomes towing a car on an A frame is okay in the UK but I understand is a nono with the gendarmes.

plenty of people trailer cars across to Spa or the ring without incident - i'd just take the V5C to show you own what your trailering (not that its proof of ownership...)

the fact you're buying a gearbox is irrelevant in my opinion. if i needed new tyres on a car when it was abroad, i'd just get them fitted locally and wouldn't think anything of it when the car came back to the UK.

I think it is the gearbox issue that was concerning me most.

Being brand new, around £13000 in value - as to would Customs have any interest in it?

Meaning them wanting duty being paid on it.

Thinking, say, it might be being imported permanently and nothing to do with the car needing repair.

Any thoughts on this specific, anyone?

Get a letter from the specialist beforehand to explain what you've got and why, an invoice for the gearbox showing the taxes paid etc, and the V5 of the car. Hopefully that'll be enough, but a brand new gearbox is the tricky bit.

What kind of car can only have a gearbox fitted in Belgium?

I think you’ll need to declare the gearbox so you don’t get dinged for duties on it on the way home (‘returned goods relief’)

Is the car being repaired insured?

Is the trailer posted under 3500kg? If not, it’ll need registering

That's good advice - the letter, invoice and v5.

It's going into a GT40 replica - The gearbox is a Quaife.

The Belgium garage (American specialist) is a owned by a friend who I implicitly trust and I would be able to work alongside him.

He races American stuff and a GT40 and I don't know anyone here well enough to give the work to.
