Mini JCW GP3 | PH Auction Block

The future of the two-seat Mini looks quite different - so what better time to try the very recent past?

While the electric Minis have been very good so far - and the prospect of a GPE (or whatever it’s called in the end) is really intriguing - something about the experience is inevitably lost when ditching combustion power. Which Mini has confirmed will happen this year. That rowdiness of every Cooper S since the dawn of time will surely be toned down a tad, unless Mini can do the impossible - a la Hyundai - and deliver an EV that does a very convincing impression of something petrol-fuelled. It’ll be fun to see what happens, that’s for sure, with something potentially to come at this year’s N24 given Mini’s fondness for endurance racing.

Until then, the three generations of Mini JCW GP with engines remain highly coveted, such were the extreme lengths gone to for all of them. The first came in under 1,100kg, the second employed Bilstein coilover dampers, and the third channelled more torque than a Golf R through the front wheels exclusively. They were mad Minis in the best tradition, so hopefully that indomitable spirit can continue to the electric version.

Launching a £35k JCW in 2020 wasn’t the easiest task, not least thanks to a certain Toyota that also arrived that year (and which must be mentioned whenever the Mini is). But even without a glamorous launch to show off its track-honed ability, the 2,000 units of GP (including 575 UK cars) sold out. And it was easy to understand why, with crazy performance - including a 164mph top speed - wild appearance that featured carbon from BMW i8 production, and the promise of some much-needed attitude to the F56 experience.

Certainly, the GP was memorable, fizzy and frantic on bumpy British roads if a little restricted by its automatic gearbox.  Definitely it lost out for not being launched on a warm, smooth track that would have shown off its strengths - we know this because a press car lapped the Nordscleife in a whisker over eight minutes with sportauto, which is some going for a car equipped as standard with fairly regular Hankook Ventus TD tyre.

Imagine what it might be capable of with, for instance, a set of nearly new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, just like this one. In fact, this GP3 should be an absolute riot on track, thanks to the addition of monster AP Racing brakes as well, which necessitated the bigger alloy switch-up. Given our review suggested the standard version’s ‘emphatic front end’ made it ‘redolent of the Mini JCW race car’ even on the road, this is surely begging for a good go at the 2025 track day season. Where an auto that can’t be mis-shifted might come in handy.

This one has certainly been enjoyed as intended, with 20,000 miles and a full BMW service history. It’s the very opposite of those GPs tucked away in the hopes of appreciation and all the more appealing for it (not so say hopefully a tad more affordable as well). PPF’d from the showroom and serviced just last month, it presents basically as new, and comes with the desirable GP Touring Pack optioned on. If this is the year for by far and away the most powerful Mini yet made, this one looks a corker. Bidding has just kicked off…

Great little cars - very close to buying one, bought the GRY instead tho…

Hasn’t this got the wrong wheels on it?

I was always quite hard on these at the time for being auto only, but as time has passed(plus I've got used to only 2 pedals in the F82 M4 for 4 years as well), I do really like the idea of them a lot.

My old 2017 F56 Cooper S had to have 3 pedals for me, but I'd love to try one of these to see what they're like for sure.

I think they look ace. cool

Yeah, aftermarket wheels.

I think I'd still take a GP1 over this any day. Think they look quite tacky in the flesh, and the Auto gearbox is a no no for me.

Good choice with the GRY. Fellow owner !

It mentions above that due to AP Racing brakes upgrade it required larger diameter wheels to fit them.

Enjoy the GRY

Great looking car, and probably a riot to drive on track.
Think the wheels are non standard to accommodate the AP Brake set up.

Yes this is correct with the brakes. The AP Racing discs are the same diameter as the originals, but due to the width of the caliber the original wheels wouldn't fit on as they stuck out too much, hence the BBS wheels. This car can easily catch you out as the 40 - 70mph pick up is quick, but you need cast iron nuts to overtake fast on a b road, blink and the car will be in a ditch, on a smooth surface road(not many in the uk I know) it is Rapid.

The AP Racing brakes on my Cerbera were excellent, so I imagine that this pulls up really well. The brakes were the worse thing about my old F56 Cooper S to be honest for me. I'm quite fussy when it comes to brakes though, and I thought that they weren't all that in my E92 M3 either.

Much more fun I would think. Personally would have kept the original brakes on this as they aren’t underpowered, means you can keep the original wheels which I think is important on a car like this. But that’s just me. I have put different wheels/brakes on my GP1 but would hate to not be able to run the originals.

That lovely Venturi c/f inlet should be good for a few bhp too.

Thought about this when it came out, but already had a GP1, so bought the GRY to compliment the GP1.

Still have the GP1 and sold the GRY after 40k smile filled miles but felt the GP1 was more special for the long run!

Its got an LSD, traction control, ESP and its going to pull you into a ditch ?

They are said to be quite vicious on anything less that perfectly smooth roads...that's half the appeal for me!!

Nice, small and bonkers. Not sure about the spoiler though or the autobox.
They've done that with the GR Yaris too, to make it more palatable for some people.

I would have made the oem parts part of deal for the winning bidder. I think you’ll put some people off who then have to buy them separately, outside/after the auction. IMO.

Either way the cost would be £1500 more, some one might prefer it with bbs wheels and ap racing brakes. If they don’t they can buy original parts for £1500 and sell the bbs wheels and calipers for more than that. 😉

My car has a smidge more power through the front wheels and it doesn’t feel like that, maybe I am just used to it, was pretty unruly prior to fitting an LSD.

Would like to try one of these, did nearly get a Mini JCW.

Can tune these to 350 bhp or more, fair play to Mini for creating something that isnt too tame.

Be interesting to drive it back to back with a GRY, I think some think the car makes anything else irrelevant as it’s so competent, but sometimes you want something a bit challenging.

The intake and remap is not mentioned in the for sale article...any reason? What power is it estimated at now?
