Partners daughter.
22yrs old
5 yrs driving, clean license etc
Doing insurance renewal this week
In a nutshell it’s either very expensive or some kind of black box/drivesure data sharing bs.

Is this another back door conspiracy?
She hasn’t had a Black box since year 1 but now, she and her boyfriend will both have one.
Make it super expensive. But ‘oh if you have a data sharing device we will be much cheaper’ con trick.
I don’t like it. Wonder if it will become more widespread to us oldies?

confused

Why does the BF have a black box? Is she trying to add him to the policy?

Also, no change of address, job etc??

Has she added you as a named driver as that can help.

They both have individual policies. But both have found it unaffordable without submitting to BB being fitted
Adding older family members was ineffective cost wise

And no changes otherwise since last year? How much was the policy then and quote now?

(Interested as I have a 17-y-o...)

How expensive are we talking?

My daughter has never had a black box ins policy and still managed to get reasonable quotes (IMO) since she passed her test at 19,

I think the most she's had to pay was about £800 at age 23 (with me as a named driver) for the year while living in Ealing on her VW T-roc which she's owned from new, this dropped a bit when she moved to Oxfordshire.

Her ins will be up for renewal soon so I'm hoping the cost hasn't risen much, but mine's due at the same time and the quotes I'm getting are lower than last year so I'm not expecting much of a change plus she's a year older and more no claims bonus which will hopefully help a bit.

So around 700 with data sharing device
1200-3000! Without

Last year was 800 without

This for 1.8d bmw x1

Seems like an easy way to pressure folk into a BB.
Maybe I’m seeing something that isn’t there but we drivers are definitely getting hit from all sides

22 y/olds with a BMW X1 have a lot of claims. 22 y/olds with a BMW X1 and a BB have fewer claims, so cost less to insure. Not sure that's a con trick, and not sure what it's got to do with us oldies.

You are seeing something that isn’t there, there are so many companies that someone would price lower if they thought there was profit in it. The attitude in your posts makes it difficult to want to spend time helping tbh.

So the price is £1200.

They are offering a discount if a black box is fitted as it reduces the risk.

Your choice.

Daughter’s first year was £1700 , 17 years old. Black box was used for 6 months. They collected enough data and asked for it to be returned.

6 months without any telematics, renews this month at £1100. Try some other companies. We are with Bell

I just took out a policy for my 17yr son, who past his test tuesday. £3100 with me as an additional driver and no black box. others were cheaper but black box was required, also no black box tick on Compare the market resulted in £10000 minimum. The car is a 2009 Mercedes Aclass A150.

Cheap( frown ) insurance can be had.

That sounds like a fortune. My 17yo pays £800 for a Panda. The 19yo on a Fiesta is £900, but that’s including business mileage.

Both have telematics linked to their phones rather than a black box in the car.

Easy option- have a BB and save money or dont have a BB and spend more money....

Maybe look at buying a car that a typical young person doesn't drive. If there isn't much data on a 23 year old woman driving a Ford Galaxy for example, then the prices tend to be cheaper.

Being honest I’m not so sure what all the fuss is about - back when I passed my test, 39 years ago we were paying similar sums to today (so in fact faaaaar more) but this was to insure 45bhp Fiestas, old Escorts, old Marinas and the like.

Kids now all seem to be swanning round in brand new stuff - A classes seem popular yet paying 40 years style premiums.

I'm seeing similar. The youngsters at our work all have cars 4-7 years old. One lad is 21, has been driving for 2 years, had 2 crashes and is complaining about the cost to insure his forthcoming Merc CLA... He's looking at over £4k.

My first car was a 10 year old (rusty) 1.0 Fiesta Popular, with windy windows, no radio, no headrests and a whopping 4 gears. It was ace. Cost me £1300 to buy and £800 to insure, which works at at over £1600 now.

Don’t know why I’m accused of a bad attitude?
Far from it. You pays yer money etc.
it just seems odd that a person with 5 yrs ncb is still being asked to have BB when they haven’t had one since year 1. (Fiat500)

I also agree that we paid plenty in the past. But that doesn’t soften the pain now.

Is a X1 a typical young persons car?
1 series yes but surely not a kiddy wagon lol

Anyway , I’ll shut up now. It’s a done deal for another year

It wouldn't surprise me if, within a couple of years, insurers are requesting black boxes for the majority of polices and then have obscenely high prices for those that wish to drive without them.
A few of my more senior colleagues now drive with a telematic device linked to their insurer in order to reduce the increase on them each year.

That was kinda my point
