Scrapping a car

Afternoon all

I'm in a position I've not been in before where I'm likely going to scrap one of our cars.

Is it just a case of ringing a few local places and getting quotes for then to take it away and scrap. What sort of money should I be looking at?

You'll get 300/400 all day on Facebook market place or the likes, the only downside of that is dealing with the utter cretins and crooks that will be looking for cars at that level

Mod edit seems very heavy handed FWIW, it also renders the OP utterly useless by removing any context/description of the car.

There are online portals for scrapping cars. You enter the reg. no. and your postcode and they come back to you with a price. They'll also give you the documentation to prove the car has been scrapped within the environmental rules.

I've scrapped a couple of cars recently, a 2004 Polo and a 2007 Clio both belonging to my son. Both runners but needing expensive repairs.

The local breakers paid me £352 for the Polo* and £305 for the Clio, they collected them from my house.

Sold a year apart, they told me the amount paid varies from day to day and is based, primarily on weight for the scrap value.

• The Polo only cost me £200 and we ran it for nearly 5 years before scrapping due to sill corrosion/MOT fail.

The last time couple of times i've needed to scrap a car i've just gone through whoever offered the most after trawling some of the online portals.

Mainline salvage is ringing a bell.

One other thing I would also check is the scrap value of the catalyst. I had a friend scrap a Honda a few years back for £300, turns out the catalyst alone was worth about £900.
Potentially a bargaining tool depending on the car.

In both my cases of scrapping, the breaker asked whether the car had it's original catalytic converter fitted and the driver who collected checked before taking the cars.

It really depends what said car is, it's condition and where you are.

If it's a rusting old Vauxhall Corsa that's been sat in a drive since 2005 and won't move, you may not even get anything for it and instead might be free disposal if the local metal recyclers can be bothered coming to drag it away... or it could be a 10yr old Land Rover Evoque with a knackered engine in which case then its not really "scrap" and there are several online salvage buyers who'll pay a lot more than "scrap" rates, scrap rates being XX amount of pounds per ton.

If you're lucky enough to live anywhere near a breaker's yard they will probably take it for ~£300.
Driven 2 to my local recently, got just under £300 for a Polo, just over for a 318. They didn't even come out to check the car.
