Numberplate transfer help, does my friend still own this?

Hi !
A friend of mine bought a car in October which had a cherished number plate on it, "cherished plate 1"
He then put his own plate on it, "cherished plate 2". That is the plate on the car now.
Now he has offered the first plate to me...but did he have to do something in particular to maintain ownership of it, and subsequently be able to transfer ownership to me ?
He thinks that in order to free up "cherished plate 1", he would have had to have taken "cherished plate 1" off the car, then put the car's original registration on until the logbook arrived, and then put "cherished plate 2" on.
However, is there some other way to free up and transfer "cherished plate 1" ?
What role does the car's original reg play in all this ?

If it was not transferred to a retention certificate and was not the registration originally issued to the vehicle, I believe it could be lost forever (because removal of a plate reverts to the original reg) AIUI.He needs to ring DVLA to ask really.
As said above, Plate 1 should've been retained first.
However, putting Plate 2 on would've just gone over Plate 1 in my experience. Back in 2015, a family member bought a car that had a cherished plate on (AB03 ACB). We, without retaining AB03 ACB, put her plate on it (XY05 XZY). When we sold the car, we retained XY05 XZY and the DVLA system told us to put AB03 ACB back on.
And we did check that AB03 ACB was not a plate put on when new, which it wasn't.
If you're desperate for the plate, Plate 2 needs retaining, then Plate 1, then Plate 2 reassigning. £160 in costs!

Plate 1 should have been put on retention, then once the V5 arrived with the car’s original plate on it, plate 2 should have then been assigned. Now it’s been done this way I’m not sure on the fate of plate 1. I would call the DVLA and ask. Unfortunate if it’s lost as it’s kind of dumb you have to do it that way.

From my experience, it's just the previous plate and not the previous previous (original) plate.TX.
I think the DVLA system is a bit dumb in this regard, which has advantages for those in the OPs situation!
