Garmin Audio 20 Touchpad satnav - route change audio volume

I'm stumped by this one. Currently driving a 2014 Mercedes with built-in Garmin satnav. The system has live traffic updates including recommendations of alternative routes. The problem is the sound volume of those recommendations is so quiet you can't hear them.
The odd thing is that the sound volume of normal route guidance announcements is fine and also easy to adjust. But I've been completely unable to find any way to increase volume of the alternative route recommendations.
Anyone know how to do this? There's nothing in any of the instruction books and no Youtube videos seem to cover it.
