Left hand throttle pedal

My wife has limited use of her right leg following an accident and hasn't driven since but we recently bought a BMW i3s which has great one pedal driving so I'm thinking a left pedal throttle conversion might be a solution to get her back driving, has anyone done similar?

What about hand control for the throttle - that's a relatively common approach and would also have the benefit of not confusing the life out of you if you ever went to drive it! I suspect it might be a cheaper option too.

I would go down the hand control route? They are really easy to use and really common.

My Grandad has this done back in late 1970's on his Mazda 323 I think it was, he'd had a stroke down his right side. Worked very well from what I remember and got him back behind the wheel, drove to their place in Spain lots of times and he even passed his Advanced Driving Test (again) post stroke.

Only slight mishap was when my Gran forgot and promptly drove the car through their (thankfully) wooden garage door. We still laugh about that now....

My Mum had a Stroke in 2011 that affected the right hand side of her body.

She doesn't drive very often at all, however in that time we've had several vehicles converted to left hand throttle and they've all worked really well. The conversions have been done on 2x MINI Countrymans and a Mazda 6 (these both had floor hinged throttle pedal just like the BMW, they worked great), and a Vauxhall Insignia and now on a 2022 Lexus ES which have the flip down pedals as they're mounted beneath the steering column.

The obvious benefit about modern cars and fly by wire throttle is that you can switch between one side and the other as you please.

Hand controls or left foot throttle are pretty run of the mill conversions for any disabled adaptation company.

I have just had twin flip throttle pedals installed in my daughter's Corsa via a disability adaptations company. The OEM pedal is removed and replaced with a pedal for right footed folk, but reach up above where a clutch pedal should be and pull down the left foot throttle that flips the right hand pedal up out of the way. Obviously the system works in reverse. Was around £250 + VAT installed (VAT is non payable if your disabled).

Thanks for all the replies, I think the floor throttle will be better than a hand conversion given our specific circumstances. Good to hear a few have gone that route and found it successful - it gives me some confidence if we decide to do this in the future.
