Persona Reg & New Car - Is there no better way?

I have the retention certificate for my personal registration and at the weekend will be picking up a new (to me) car from a motor trader.

Ideally I'd like to have my own registration on the car when I collect it, one call to the insurance and less faff with plates later but I don't believe it's possible?

I'll need to collect the car and insure on it's original registration.
Wait a few days or week for the V5 to arrive.
Apply the registration, swap the plates and update insurance.

Is there a better way?

I could ask the trader to apply the registration for me now as I've paid a deposit, but if the V5 doesn't arrive by the weekend they can't transfer ownership?

I really wish the V5 situation was digital and instant the same way applying/removing personal registrations is.

If you change keeper on the V5c the online way, as opposed to posting, this is usually quicker to receive the new V5c. When you take out insurance, you have a 14 day grace period to make any changes, so there shouldn't be an amendment fee so long as you make the change within 2 weeks (assuming the V5 turns up in that time, which I'd expect it to)

Many insurance companies allow you to change the reg online anyway using the portal, so you don't even need to pick up the phone.

Personally I'd keep it simple, wait for the new V5 and then just do a normal plate transfer.
