2010 Smart ForTwo Diesel - any experience?

Morning All.
Long story short - I commute 200 miles twice per week. Currently in a Kia Sorento (Have the big AWD as tow horses / hay etc. So need to keep it) Kia averages 35 mpg roughly - taking in account commute (A roads and M6) and towing duties.
It broke down on sunday - fixed now, decided to dump it's oil, but meant I had no car on monday - using my wifes car not an option.
Thinking it might be smart (get it!) to get a small car to commute it, have as a spare, and generally use when I don't need the big one. We have 3 kids and 2 dogs, but most of the time, during the week, its just me, or me and a child in my car.
Found a 2010 Smart For Two Diesel for sale locally. 70,000 miles. MOT until December. _£1250
On paper, I'd be saving ££ on diesel alone if I only used if for commuting, let alone short around town journeys. Tax free (VED) insurance £250 for me and my wife FC.
There's not much to lose here as far as I can see.
Yes its a painfully slow car - 0.8 diesel, but will do me fine to pootle about in.

Seemingly will get around 80 mpg ....???!!!!
But .. i don't know much about smart cars - anyone got / had one?

We had one for about 5 years it was good fun little car. It was purchased for the wife to commute to work in but she changed jobs to be much closer to home fairly soon after purchase, so it didn't get the use imagined. However it was so cheep to keep we just hung onto it as a third car.
They feel much quicker than the figures would suggest, it becomes all about maintaining momentum which the go-cart handling just encourages. You learn to drive around the dim witted automated manual, but it is the main downside as far as driving experience goes. However it does work well in queuing traffic. Doing lots of local short local runs it never dropped below 50mpg and would easily see 65+ on a decent trip. Not outstanding but it was thrashed mercilessly everywhere.
The only spend on it other than normal service items was a replacement clutch at about £500 fitted. The pressure plate decided to part company with the clutch cover with all 3 straps snapping. The car still drove fine but as soon as you stopped and the clutch released it sounded like someone shaking bricks in a metal dustbin.
