Skoda previews new Elroq vRS ahead of reveal
Fast MEB cars haven't exactly electrified the performance crossover market - might the Elroq change things?
Skoda has confirmed there will be a flagship vRS version of its smallest electric SUV, the Elroq. As a reminder - because it’s easy to get lost amongst Kamiqs, Karoqs and Kodiaqs (seriously) - the Elroq is the newest addition to the line-up, a junior EV SUV to sit beneath the Enyaq. Consider it like a Puma to a Kuga, basically, but exclusively with battery power.
Like the larger Skoda SUV, the Elroq is underpinned by the MEB modular electric architecture, which means we can probably expect similar features for this vRS as those seen previously. For the moment, an Elroq is only offered with a single motor setup, though given a dual-motor 85x version has already been confirmed we’d bank on the vRS following suit. Or it could ape the related VW ID3 GTX, and crank power to beyond 300hp while keeping rear-drive. But that seems a little wild (all things being relative) for sensible Skoda.
Probably it will follow the template laid out by the original vRS Enyaqs, both of which are also due for renewal soon, with the 299hp dual-motor setup, a slightly lower ride height and some sportier details. Some clever EV torque vectoring would be nice, alongside adjustable regen, but let's be realistic in our expectations. Skoda has already confirmed that Hyper Green will be a colour option (of course), and that the ‘high-gloss black Tech-Deck Face’ found on all other Elroqs will be carried over. (Don’t worry, that was news to us as well.)
Interestingly, the Elroq vRS will be exhibited at Milan Design Week after its debut next Thursday; as well as the new car, the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea gallery will host the official unveiling of Skoda trainers designed in collaboration with Czech brand Botas. All part of the ‘Be More Elroq’ campaign, see, where the car will be ‘the centrepiece of an immersive pathway’ in Milan. Which sounds unlike most Skoda unveils, if nothing else. ETA: The Elroq is, however, damned nearly as heavy as the Ioniq 5 and EV6 by the looks of it.
