Trying to find my old car

Hi all, I have been trying to locate my old Range Rover as it has my old private plate on that I let go at the time of sale to a garage but really shouldn’t have I know, i have done all the checks I can do and I’m now stuck so if anyone can help I would very much appreciate it, it’s a black Range Rover P13 AVO. I sold the car to a garage in 2016 and the next owner drove it for 1 year and it’s been off the road since I believe and would love to try and buy the plate back I did go to the garage a few years back but they have changed hands since and have no, or say they have no details of who they sold the car to at the time and I have written to DVLA and they said my reason for wanting the details of the current owner isn’t sufficient and I contacted a PI company that could only tell me that I’m down as the owner of the number plate as on the system but as I sold the car with the plate on then I have forfeit the rights and it’s now the keeper of the car that is the legal owner.

All of the above is true and accurate.... the plate is no longer yours.

All you can hope is either the current owner reads this, or someone that knows him/her does and tells them.

It had a V5 issued in March 2019, so possible it changed hands then.

Not had an MOT since then though, and it would need an MOT/Tax to be able to take the plate off it I believe?

To be correct. The plate is never ‘yours’ anyway. It is always the DVLA that have the right to the registration mark. A registered keeper may have the right to display that registration mark.
