Unable to Tax car due to no MOT Cert...

Morning,

Im trying to renew my Car VED/TAX that expires on 30th April. My MOT is due by 30th April and its booked for Wednesday 23rd. When I try to tax the car using the 16 digit reference number the www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax site claims that they cant find a valid MOT Cert. The previous MOT was 1st May 2024.

I have a Valid MOT and wish to renew the VED before 30th April.

Any ideas how I can tax the car ? Wait until I have a new MOT?

Is the correct answer, the car cannot be taxed unless it has a valid MOT on the 1st day of the tax (i.e. 1st May). As your MOT expires on 30th April, currently on the 1st May it won't have a valid MOT.

It has to have a valid MOT on the day the new tax starts, which in your case will be the 1st May. You'll just have to wait until the MOT is done.

I've had this situation before and (worried the car might fail the MOT but needing to remain legal for on-street parking) I've just MOT'd it within the last couple of weeks of the MOT.

You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date

Back in the days when all taxing was done at the post office, I knew a guy who had some long-term issue with fixing his car for MoT, so he went and taxed the car a month early, forgoing the final month. Back then, the system apparently accepted selling a year's tax disc before the existing one expired, with an MoT that was about to run out. Clearly that loophole has been closed now!
