it's someone else's fault
Discussion
I would not have the sheer audacity to appear stood in front of the car I had ruined by my own stupidity making out it is someone else fault.
Maybe just say, “yeah, I screwed up and I will resolve not to be such a derp in the future, my apologies for adding to the insurance claims burden and in turn everyone’s premiums”.
We all make mistakes, that’s a belter but it’s how you handle it, and blaming the signs is feeble minded.

He ignored the sign(s). Must be the sign(s) fault.
It would be interesting to see what the signs in question actually looked like. Without any signage, it's not at all obvious how deep that water is (well it wasn't until someone considerately plonked a car in the middle of it to help gauge the depth). I mean obviously anyone with half a brain would drive into that extremely carefully, and once it started coming up above about the middle of the wheels would stop and reverse out again, but I suspect an awful lot of drivers would just assume they can drive through it if the road isn't closed.
ETA: Not trying to defend him at all! Just saying that I can see how it happened and suspect a depressing proportion of drivers would have done the same.

Sadly the vast majority of drivers would have done exactly the same. ETA: Not trying to defend him at all! Just saying that I can see how it happened and suspect a depressing proportion of drivers would have done the same.

But it doesn't really matter what signage there may or may not be, as you really can't tell how deep the water is under a bridge like that it makes sense to enter it slowly to find out - assuming you have any sense!
