Hi , I have just had a call from the leasing company that my car will be scheduled for delivery on the 26th June although i don t have a confirmation just a phone call
I was told I would get VIN number and reg when I do , I do have the reg number but not the vin .My question is can I now put my insurance in place as this is going to be a second car and I know the later I apply for insurance the more expensive it s going to be , basically I want to do it now and also sort the gap insurance out .The reg number at the moment is not being recognised but I can put make and model.
I take it I can do this as even if the delivery is late I will still have insurance in place anyone with experience with this and could help it would be appreciated thanks

To get quotes you don’t necessarily need the reg plate but to effect cover ie have an inception date in place you do.
Without a reg plate no Insurer can issue the certificate.
Why do you think the Insurance will be more expensive date wise when you take it out though ?

Hi I do have the Reg number but at the moment it’s not being recognised, car is brand new so not sure how it tak s for the dvla system to upload it , as for instance I was always told the earlier you apply the cheaper it is and the later you apply the more expensive it can be , if that’s not the case then it’s no problem…I have realised as well that if i sort insurance for the 26th and it’s delayed a day or two then when my lease runs it won’t be the 26th and technically the insurance runs out leaving me without insurance for those delayed days …I think I will wait for full confirmation

Sorry I missed the bit about you having the plate but not the Vin.
I don’t think I’ve ever given the Vin number to any Insurer.
I know there are those that say using comparison sites and leaving Insurance to the last minute can cost you more but I’m not sure that’s necessarily fact.
Bear in mind that sales agents literally only read off the numbers from a matrix that is compiled by the actuaries and includes a degree of computer assisted rate modelling anyway.
Providing you have got quotes in place then they should be live for generally 30 days ( you can check how long with the Insurer ) and so incepting the policy at those terms should be easy enough even assuming only a couple of days delivery notice.

It definitely is. Having just insured 2 cars where the inception dates were flexible the variance between getting it insured straight away and waiting 21 days was around 35%. So the OP is wise to get the insurance sorted straight away.

And not all quotes last 30 days, which I discovered to my detriment, as that was my assumption too. Hastings, for example, were only valid for 6 hours after the quote. So again worth checking when getting quotes.

Insurers can issue a certificate using the VIN; whether their computer will let them is another matter.
I’ve been retired for over 10 years and hand-written certs were still used back then.

I can’t remember the last time I had anything handwritten from an Insurer but it would have been a temporary cover note and a lot longer than 10 years ago !

You are right, just another way to milk more money, I learned the hard way, flights and holidays can be cheaper or more expensive depending on the day you look too.

We’ve done ours on the day it arrives on the drive and haven’t noticed an increase in premium from getting initial quotes?

You could always give your insurers a call as I can’t imagine it’s the first time they have had this.

I had this issue, the system not recognising the car so could not get a quote. Rang up my insurer, they had the same issue, but a bit of jiggery poker at their end, technical IT terminology, provided a quote that was reasonable. Said they would also honour it when I got a delivery date, provided no claims or convictions etc in the meantime, and they did do that. Tesco if that helps.

Depends when you got the initial quote, 23 days before cover is the optimum apparently.

Private car insurance was fully computerised a long time ago, but we were certainly issuing cover notes on the commercial side when I retired.
These days it's a case of "Computer says no".
