Anyone recently taken LGV training?
Discussion
I want to put another feather in the cap and have picked up provisional LGV forms. I have grandfather rights for seven and a half ton vehicles. Once I've filled the forms out and had a medical I then need to apply for two theory tests, one a hazard perception test. If anyone has recently taken an LGV course, did you find any links online, or books that could help?
You will need to buy the LGV Theory DVD http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0115529047 so you know the questions etc that you find in the test, its £20ish but a must really, also this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001AI7DCY is a godsend, has all the hazard perception clips in it, once you've done a few of them you will know what to look for.
I'm selling my copy of the theory DVD on Amazon marketplace if you're after a copy.
TBH you will struggle without them

Do they still make you take your test in some insufferably bad old Leyland with a crash 'box and no power assistance on the steering?
The following day, first temping job, I had to figure out the workings of a Scania 143m with pre-selector and electronic split. I had to wander back into the depot manager's office and ask for the instructions
Best of luck with it - it's not quite the 'work always guaranteed' ticket it used to be, but it's always a useful thing to have.

Dunk76 - Went for a complimentary drive in a LGV2 rated lorry with 9 gears, split box. Think it was an Iveco and did well, no fancy stuff on it though. Once I get the '2' a large haulage company down the road are interested in putting me through the '1'. Living around Dartford there are stacks of haulage companies this way (both sides of the Thames), looking forward to the challenge and career change.

Get your ADR (PetroChem) ticket, or whatever today's equivalent is - best thing I ever did. Got me off s
tty multidrop and onto nights for Hoyer at Thurrock.
They are just over the Thames from me, even think they are opposite the training school I'm going with. Heard that ticket is worth getting.

Either that or you get yourself a few years on 40s and start then collecting all cub scout badges which will let you drive cranes or the big plant-hire gear.
HIAB is a must, and Forklift is worth the money too.
Took the C class (HGV 2 equivilant) drivers test today and passed. This included an hour long driving test with some 'free time' driving included. Next step once my licence is returned is approaching a local haulage company, who I've already spoken too, to put me through my C+E (HGV 1 equivilant).

'free time' ??Do you mean 10 minutes of 'independent driving' in the test ?
Oh & congrats

@ Dunk, I haven't learnt that bit yet, making a bacon sarny on the run will come later no doubt

Got there in the end; Went on a course all last week with a local container Co, a type of work experience. It gave me the chance to drive an artic fully loaded, approx 44 tons.
Took my test today in London with the same lorry, Daf, and passed with only 4 faults on the driving course. Hard work but a great experience and one I am glad I went for. Time scale from interest to finish, HGV 1 & 2, was approx 7 months.

Hi i've been lurking for a good few months now and just had to give a reply,12 years ago when i was 25 or there abouts i did my class 2 and 6 months later class 1, for the past 5 years i've been doing
nights, every job be it driver plumber or whatever has its pro and cons but i believe driving has more cons than many others_ check trucknet...
Guess i do love being on the m25 at 2/3am and on my way home can be magic listening to your favourite radio(or cd) station (not heart magic or classic tear jerkers),i wouldnt want to drive days now with big accidents and delays in all parts of the country!
You will have to get used to warehouse persons, security guards, fork lift drivers and foremost your governor treating you like s
te.As a petrolhead tho i do still have some magic moments and i'll give you one example.. during the summer months my company does some london market work, we have a fleet of Daf xf space and super space cabs and driving a super cab 480bhp and 16 speed box through london (lol, consider my cars a pug 106 rallye s1)at night is wicked.. if i leave new covent garden (battersea) at 11.55pm to head for new spitalfield market on the A12, I tune in to Radio 4 and by 11.59 i'll be on Westminster bridge(north) in a huge artic turning(sharp)right at the embankment and listening to the midnight gongs live on the radio, or repeat that an hour later when Radio 4 plays out with 'Land of hope and glory' with big drums my lefts arm is druming along in between gear changes, i'll even turn the volume up to 11 and open my window so the tourists can hear, makes me feel warm and patriotic.
To sum it up i wish i'd done a plumbing course _less hours and more expendable money to blow on better toy's but hay ho you live and learn..
