Don't be too distracted by the mpg at this price - any "saving" on good mpg can easily be wiped out by it going bang or needing expensive repairs.

Buy the best condition, best maintained car that has recently had things like tyres and brakes done.

No point buying a car for £1500 that has the best on paper economy that you then have to scrap because it is uneconomical to repair.

surely a mondeo estate would be your best bet imo.

Personally I'd go for a similarly priced 328i, but how about this, looks "tidy"

A 316i estate auto? That's going to be a right slug.

Citroen C5 estate diesel...or a 1.8 if you want lower miles and lower economy.

You may laugh but there are a lot of high mileage cars on Autotrader including one with nearly 250k on the clock.
