Winter Tyres, when are you taking them off?

I fully understand that everyone without winters are better drivers, no one really "needs" them, and there is no proof that they are any better in anything other than fresh powder, or sheet ice, no matter how cold it is.



Now thats out of the way, to those of us that were stupid enough to buy them when are you planning to take yours off, and where in the country are you?

I'm thinking of doing it this weekend or maybe next week. The forecast is mainly warmer than the tyres work best at, except for a couple of frosty mornings.

Should I leave them for now to take account of the frosty mornings, and just in case we have a late cold snap, or swap to the summers because it is mostly warm enough now?

I took mine off at the start of Feb. I'm putting them back on tomorrow, it's snowing here at the moment, and there's more snow due on Sunday and Monday.

I'll have the wheels off anyway, as need to replace the ARB drop links and fix a knackered handbrake cable, so there's no panic about swapping them.

I'm quite pleased we put them on Mrs BG Panda, as it was woefully under tyred on its originals. We put 175/70x13 Snowtracs on the 5x13 steels, in place of the 155/80x13 super skinny super tall Eco slipperies it was fitted with.

The winter set are going in the shed probably when the clocks change, and we have some Grey 5.5x14 GB Milano alloys to go on (£50 a corner, so cheap), with Nokian H 185/60x14 summer tyres.

I reckon Pandy is going to be a whole lot more fun, and very chuckable/grippy this summer The original spec wheel/tyre combo always held it back, rather than the 54bhp

i'm all for the october - march winters, april to september summers.

Its a daily shed the advantages of summer rubber are roughly nil on the i want to get up the road to my house without getting stuck stakes.

Anyway if its sunny i'll be taking something without a roof

My bargain bucket "winter tyres" in the shape of Toyo T1R's did awesome in the snow


They coped with Castle Combe alright and will be dead after Abingdon ...... then it will be A048's or 888's for the "summer" edition

Was considering this weekend, but it's been pretty cold up here this week and my work route is over the north York moors. So will probably aim for the end of march now.

Probably replace them as soon as I get some new summer tyres, the ones on the wheels I took of to put the winters on are at the legal limit. Some point in the next week or two.

They're on SWMBO's family hack, so before the next time we do a big trip in it as I drive then and it was noticeably more squirmy on the last one. But then it was 11 degrees.
