Best Car for under £1,000

Hi all,
I'm looking for advice...
My girlfriend is looking to buy a car with a max budget of £1000
What do you think the best car you can buy for that money is? I've seen a coule (not many) realtively tidy 306's for this much but not much else. Any Ideas?

Depends what you mean by best.
Reliability, Fun, Pace???
306 is a good shout though. I had a DTurbo and besides a few annoying electrical niggles it was fairly robust (Just don't drive through large puddles)
Focus' can be had for under a grand, but a lot of them are ropey, so look hard. I'm on my second 100k+ Focus and they've both been fairly reliable, wheel bearings being their pitfall.
Plenty of cars to choose from though.

Hmmm, some interesting options there.
Petrol or diesel doesn't really matter. However, will need at least 4 four seats. Those are about the only requirements.
Given that I'm inclined to be a little overprotective, I'd like something that keeps her safe and isn't built like a plastic bag, but with this budget I'm not expecting miracles!

My 306 Rallye cost about £1000 by the time I'd taxed it, cleaned it, put floor mats in and generally tidied it up. The brakes are f

In the past I've bought a Raver 45 with 1 owner, 6 years old and 53k miles for £600. That's also been perfect.
There is no "best car" under a grand. It's whatever bargain you can turn up that suits you at the time. An LS400 strikes me as the best thing to buy under £1000 if we're going off average models, or a Ka. Or maybe an MX5

This Volvo then?12 months MOT, safe as a safe thing and only £695 with enough room for almost anything you can chuck at it.
