gearbox - does this sound terminal?

just left work, forgot phone, nipped back. on crusing into the car park i noticed a whine from the front end but thought i'd investigate during the drive home.
nothing doing, can't get it in gear. clutch feels fine and can get 1st/3rd if i rev slightly and force it. reverse is a no no and i've parked front end in.
currently waiting for an illuminous orange van to come and tell me it's fecked. am i going home on a flatbed?

i thought clutch as when i pulled away the first time i had no power in 2nd gear, as though i was slipping the clutch.
no idea on levels, i checked the linkeage and it is tight and secure. i'm sitting in the warm and will let the RAC man fault find.
bit of a pisser as i only need a car for the next 4 weeks. at least there's a clio breakers up the road and plenty of garages nr work.
not looking forward to getting up at 5am for the train for the rest of the week

mk2 clio, 1.6rsi (or, more fittingly, arse).
you can , with much effort, select 1st & 3rd. reverse just crunches.
we've a knowledgeable chap in the office whose dad owns a garage. there's a clio breaker up the industrial estate advertising a gearbox on fleabay for £180 and I could have a new clutch fitted for roughly the same outlay. I'll investigate
tomorrow and also see what the breaker will offer for the car. doubt a new box is a cost effective solution tbh.
its been a cheap commer unto now, I'm just pissed off as I finish work in 2wks, emigrate in 6, but need a car until the day I leave.

i can get a new box for £90-125 [depending which speedo sender type mine is, as these things go i reckon the odds are it won't be the cheap one!].
fitting will be £150 plus I need to get it to the garage - will probably beg my dad to drive down with his A frame.
so - £240-275 for a new box. sounds ok but....
it needs a new front screen - £90 insurance claim
a new front fog - £20 from ebay
either a ball joint or steering arm to cure a knock - ?
so i'm looking at £400ish to get the car fully sorted. there's nothing else wrong at all with it, bodywork and interior very near mint, 100k miles. has to be worth £8-900?
given those figures, and that i'd be pushed to get £150 from the scrappy/breaker as is, i'm erring towards paying the money and getting it done. what say the Ph sages?
