Then it's the 'rows of Testa Rossas'!

How many 456s? I mean WTF was he thinking? Why did he need to buy so many?

I recall tales at the height of the oil boom where it was said that folk such as this bought a car with a full tank of fuel and when it ran out, they left it where it was and bought another. I don't know how true that is, but it would eplain the rows of rotting Merc 500s left abandoned with the windows down!

There's a comment after the article that I think sums it up quite well: "You want to buy a Ferarri. They want to buy a Ferarri." It's not about the car, it's about outrageous shows of wealth. What do you buy when you've bought everything you can think of? Answer: More of them.

Very sad that those cars were never appreciated for what they are, and that they've been left to rot.

I know...and between him and his brother i think they have over 20 McLaren F1s. How many were actually sold / converted?

A little over 100 in total were built, not sure how many have been destroyed.

The article was a little strange in that it's about a trip almost a decade ago. However, the author writes a great informative newsletter (mostly about Ferrari's). Sorry to see it is now not available online unless you subscribe to it.

I saw the Sultan's collection of XJ220s when they came back to the UK for rebuilding. He and his friends had used them for racing on and off road and they were in a right state. I wouldn't want one of his used cars.
