Slightly benign question, but it needs asking...

I'm currently looking at '10 plate Ford Focus Zetec S (boring, but they look smart and are ok for insurance), and can't decide between the Petrol 1.6 or 1.8.

The 1.6 has 115bhp and the 1.8 has 125bhp, the torque figure is virtually the same. Obviously would like a bigger engine, but with only 10 bhp of a difference and quoted MPG higher on the 1.6, maybe that's the correct choice.

Thoughts?

Driven both, the 1.8 does feel peppier. My advice, buy a Golf...

Depends on what you can afford and type of driving you'll be doing. If you can afford the 'higher everything', then it's the 1.8. If money is an issue, it's the 1.6. If you're in town most of the time it's the 1.6; if you're doing lots of long runs fully loaded then it's the 1.8. Resale; it's the 1.6 that will sell easier. Ditch the Focus; get a DS3!

The 1.8 will most likely get very similar mpg to the 1.6, I'd be buying the 1.8 personally!

They don't any more, which leads me to believe the 1.8 is an older engine.

You could buy a nice car for the price of a one year old focus and still have money left over for insurance.
