panda 100hp/jag s type dilemma
Discussion
ok so im due to collect my panda 100hp tomorrow but im now having second thoughts about it. the reasoning behind the panda is its cheap to run, good to insure for my age(23 but no no claims) cheap tax etc. a cursory glance on AT and the ph classified last night bought some rather cheap jag s types up. i could get my self the 4.0 v8 s type in british racing green kitted out with pretty much everything and pay for the insurance for less than the panda is going to cost excluding insurance. theres also a couple of the 3.0 v6s for similar money, but with fewer miles. anyone got anything that should put me off going a bit mad on the jags? things to look out for, common faults etc. sll the cars are pre the 2001 tax increase and mpg isnt too much of a worry as i dont do many miles, should i just go a bit mad and treat my self?

The early S Type Jags were crap - so enjoy your Panda 100HP and perhaps go for one of the later S-Types next time around.
Picture of a BMW in profile, now it makes sense. Op, for years and years Jag have beaten BMW (and Merc) in customer reliabilty surveys like JD Power and TG. Make sure you know what you are buying and you should be fine. Early S Types are fine by me.
A manual 3.0 is quite sporty and will feel almost as quick as a 4.0 auto. Although the V8 is quicker and has more potential.
Btw - I had a Jag (V12 XJ-S) at 19, so can only recommend them

The late model S-Types however, (04 onwards, different rear lights, aluminium bonnets etc etc) are much improved over the earlier models. More robust 6 speed gearboxes and a much better engine (in 4.2 V8 guise).

ETA For your needs, I think the Panda will be great. The late model S-Types however, (04 onwards, different rear lights, aluminium bonnets etc etc) are much improved over the earlier models. More robust 6 speed gearboxes and a much better engine (in 4.2 V8 guise).
The cheaper Jag offsetting the insurance is OK in year one but what about year 2?
The initial saving is a one off but the higher insurance/tax/running costs are ongoing.
Right now, in your shoes, I'd take the Panda and wait for the Jag prices to drop as fuel prices increase and then decide.

The point everyone seems to miss is this. Forget buying costs, if the Jag goes expensively wrong, can you afford to fix it?
If you're living with parents and earning good money then that puts a completely different slant on it than if you're renting a flat and earning minimum wage (for example).
The Panda ought to be relatively trouble free, the Jag could be, but there's no guarantees. Also tyres, brakes, servicing, everything will be dearer in the Jag.
Day to day affordability is the key to it here I'd suggest.

The fact that you are undecided between a Panda 100hp and a Jag s-type has cheered me right up.

Stick with the Panda for now, then in two years (when you're 25 so insurance will be cheaper) get an S Type R, which is the one you really want.
^^^This, it will be worth the wait.Ari said:

It really grates me when people say silly shot like this. Ok the Panda will have warranty on it, but you've still got to pay for servicing and depreciation and finance costs must be counted somewhere.
That aside. What if the OP was looking at a V6 mondeo, Vectra or 2.0 Focus. Why would any of these be cheaper to fix than an S Type should something go wrong?????????????
The Jag is made from gold and isn't liquid rocket powered btw. Its a global platform used as the basis for many cars. The V6 hails from Ford and the V8 is very well proven and used in many different vehicles. New parts, pattern parts and used parts are all affordably available.

That's all well and good, but one will be the best part of ten years old and wasn't exactly highly thought of when new, the other is uncomplicated and has no common faults. I know you've got a boner for anything with a big fat engine but even you must appreciate that sometimes that isn't the best option for everyone.
