split-rim alloys
Discussion
Hi, I have a set of three-piece split rim alloys, but the outer polished rim is quite badly kerbed and corroded. Does anyone know whether the rim section can just be unbolted and sent away for refurb'ing, or do split rims tend to be under some form of uniform tension?
Second question is, does anyone have a recommendation for someone to refurb the rims (polished alloy with a thick lacquer on them).
Cheers

What is the point of split rim alloys? They look great, but are they stronger, lighter?
Alloys wheels are created using a single workpiece. There are certain do`s and dont which have to be followed in order to get a successful outcome which restricts the shapes. A split rim allows multiple workpieces which increase the flexibility of the shapes that can be created and thus allow weight reduction. Weight reduction of rotational masses like wheels has a much greater impact on performance than static mass.R

That's brilliant, thank you. R

The inner and outer rims are not normally cast but are flow formed (see here) which gives a higher strength to weight ratio than casting. The centres can be cast but are often machined from billet.
Thanks, Ive updated my explanation (and my brain). The principle of what I was saying was correct but manufacturing process was factually inaccurate.

Yes they can; you could speak to Lepsons, BJV engineering, Image etc.
Thanks for those suggestions - have emailed Lepsons and BJV for a quote. I cant see anuthing on Image's website that suggests they do refurbishment though.Forums | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
