I just called for a quote on my service for my C2 and since I need 4tyres, brakes, clutch, exhaust, radiator, timing belt and water pump I have been quoted betweek 1.5k-2k So I have decided to do all the work myself over the next year (I love my car to bits and I plan to have it forver)

Since I'm going to take this car off the road I need something to replace it for a year, the only requirement I have is that it can last 12 months with v little or even no maintenance costs.

So far I have thought mx5, prelude, s13. I also like the idea of an estate or a van but there is littlerally nothing I wouldn't consider.

Please post any ideas

oh sorry, 1.5-2k budget, sorry it's only a little citroen but it was my first car and I've had it 7 years and it means so much to me. the bill is about the value of the car

cars been of the road always end up getting damaged so make sure you have plenty of space to complete the work

I just paid 2084 pounds getting my C2 right........it's on 2007 with 113k miles on it

New Battery
New Alternator
2 new tires
full service
clutch
bulbs
MOT
+ labour and VAT

Frankly it's cheap........113k miles in 4 years........pretty much trouble free apart from brake discs and pads


Choice was dump it........and pay the 2k for an unknown runabout.......or put it right.

My M3 was costing me about 70 quid a day in fuel alone........so it won't take me long to recoup the costs.

I reckon it would cost you around £1000 if you did all the work yourself, its all fairly straight forward stuff. But why the need to take it off the road i ask? Do you not have the money at the moment or is there another reason as all the work could be done in one weekend.

off the road simply because I'm not great with mechanincs, I'm restoring my mr2 and it's going well, but slow, I work 12 hour days and usually work 6 days a week with overtime (I'm saving for a house) so I need a car I can work on as and when I'm free but still need to get to and from work and to my lock up where my cars are stored.

Your budget for a new car is the same as it's going to cost you to do the repairs to your C2? Why not just get the repairs done then? Otherwise you're the purchase price of a new car plus the cost of fixing your C2 down, only to sell the new car when you've finished the repairs to the C2 and potentially take a hit.

That doesn't really make financial sense.

I know it's not the most financial sensible idea but I can't justify spending close to the value of my car on repairs, I'd rather take the hit, do it myself and at least enjoy working on it. My mr2 is almost done, it only needs the brakes and body work doing all the rest of the mechanics I have fixed and I have enjoyed working on it so I'd like another "project" and since I'm keeping this car regarless it seemed like a good one. give me time for something else and something to get dirty with

lol I wish it was so simple, all my mates are fairys when it comes to this, we where changing my mates timing belts on his mx5 and just when we where about to remove the old belt he bottled out, I was furious as it took ages from my mr2 that I could have been working on.

Not really. Factor in the VAT - price of new parts. If I had to take the time off work to do the work - I get a daily rate so not paid when not at work.

Supposing i paid 25% too much to drop car off and have it sorted hassle free.

Worth every penny. Especially as the M3 was costing me a fortune to do 215 miles a day in.

Ps Liam - in a similar situation to you I opted to sort the C2 out as I've had it since new and know exactly what it's worth to me.

I guess you need to decide if you want something temporary and fun, and different to the C2 like an Mx5

Or

Something run of the mill just to mile munch. My mate just paid 1k for a MG zR diesel.

Problem u have is - at those prices you could buy something that needs as much work as your C2!
