Daily Driver Needed

My mid 40's mother has just bought a 370Z and is thinking about moving a little futher from her job (80 mile a day trip)and wants a 2nd car, cheaper to run.
It needs to be:

1. Fuel efficient
2. Cheap Tax
3. Cheap Insurance
4. Reliable + good build quality

Petrol or Diesel, budget of 8 - 10k. Bluemotion Polo?

Any thoughts?

Golf MK5 Bluemotion Match? I've never looked at them used so no idea on prices, but I'd guess £10k should be do-able. Match is very well equipped, interior is a nice place to spend time. Drives quite well, but gear ratios slightly different on the Bluemotion. Tax is £30 IIRC.

I heard the Mk5 golfs have ESP module issues?

Seems odd to want a 2nd car for economy purposes but then be willing to spend £10k on it, which will then depreciate significantly (£100-150 month for the first year?).

Makes more sense to limit the budget to £2-3k IMO, get an 03-04 plate Fabia diesel (61mpg).

Yes they do. BUT, that's a 2008 model, and by then I believe they had stopped using the faulty part.

No disrespect intended, but surely that's nuts? Spending 10K on a second car to 'save' on mpg? I honestly can't see any financial saving there, only an emotional one of not ramping up the mileage on the 370? If your mum had to have a second car for that, I'd say go for a beater diesel around 2K or even less - if it breaks, bin it.

£10k on a hatchback will cost something like £1500 a year in depreciation, so it really won't be much of a saving.

If she wants something a bit special, an Audi A2 may be an idea.
