Have 3 cars now sitting on the drive, starting to get finger out and selling them, one of them needs taxing.

I have rung up some day insurance companies ( tried my car insurer and they said anything under two weeks and they refer customers to a day insurance company ). They all say it should be fine as they send a certificate of insurance but it is down to the post office.

Few people online when i search this said they have done it but they are old posts, just wondered if anyone here has done that or knows the actual rules/law on it ?

I don;t want to get a annual policy and then cancel as it incurs costs which can be more expensive than day insurance.

why do you need to insure it? the buyer needs to provide insurance if they buy it/test drive it?!

Same for tax.... buyer puts tax on it...

To make selling it easier dear boy, going to sell much faster if it is advertised with tax and MoT, also mean it isn't a illegal drive home for them, I hate buying cars where they take the tax off it, just another hassle.

They want to haggle I can take the tax off for some movement on the price.

Can't test drive if not taxed.

Fair enough, could you not add the vehicle to your current insurance for say a month, might be about the same price as one day insurance, also your not taking out one-day insurance each time a buyer/tyre kicker comes to look at the car!

With regard to taxing and [day] insuring, have you considered how you will be affected by the Continuous Insurance Enforcement legislation ?

That's what I did. Not sure why the OP wants under 2 weeks unless he's really confident of selling soon?
I put my old car on for 2 weeks while it was on AutoTrader, then just extended it in 2 week blocks until it sold.

I just want it taxed, sold all my others cars with a week of advertising them.

Can't do 2 week blocks as I have said before in the first post.

Anyone actually used day insurance for tax or knows the policies of the post office ?

It appears to be hit and miss.
The Post Offcie should NOT accept Day insurance to allow you to buy tax.
However some will just see a certificate of insurance, check that it is covering that day and issue it.

You may well have to try 3 or 4 post offices to get your tax (if you can find them these days).

Continuous insurance won't be required if it's taxed.

So if it is taxed and off the road it doesn't need insurance?

when I picked up an Alfa I'd bought and wasn't entirely sure what I'd do with it (keep it or strip it for parts) I picked it up from Leicester using day cover from tempcover.com

worked out about £24 for the day. Which, in my mind was worth it.

It's going to be much cheaper to add the car to your policy for a month than take out day insurance every day you keep the car. Furthermore, you should be able to tax the car with your covernote/certificate that they give you when you do this. I believe also that you are unable to tax a vehicle using a dayinsure product, incompetent post office employee notwithstanding.

It will either need to be taxed and insured or SORN'd.

And if it's SORN'd, then it can't be taxed.

Right after all of that, and some random posts here, I rang up the DVLA ( should have just done that in the first place !banghead)

You can get cover with day insurance, has to be insured on the day of issue for the PO to issue the disk, not all PO do this though for the very obvious reason some people don;t bother with insurance and drive around afterwards. So they are technically wrong but I can understand that if it stop scrotbags driving uninsured.

Rang my insurance provider back up and they put me through to their day insurance company , thought with the rolling insurance law thing, if someone test drove the car and it wasn't insured by me that would be illegal so thought I would have 2 weeks worth just in case, they quoted me £23 a day !

Rang the AA back and said that was ridiculous and I wanted temp cover or they could kiss goodbye to future business, low and behold they gave me 2 weeks for £44, jobs a good un, now I can take it for a run a few times and blow the cobwebbs out of her.
