What warm hatch, circa 2k, circa 35mpg

Ok first off, it doesn't HAVE to be a hatch but searching it seems these will fulfil the criteria best
My E30 will be up for sale at the end of the month, I love it but the fuel bills are crippling now, £20 seems to get me f
k all distance
The 325 came with 170Bhp from new and it feels like it has retained most of those so I am on a quest to get a similar amount of power but return better mpg
I have compiled a list of candidates by looking at the classifieds and thread here
Opinions on which is best please and likely to give me the required mpg

306 Gti 6
Leon Cupra
Mk4 Golf GTi
Octavia VRS
Ibiza Cupra

) when driven gently on long runs I got 40mpg and around town/commute it was around 28-35ish, high teens maybe low 20's when thrashed.Any car on that list will struggle to get 35mpg if driven quickly.
The Cupra I had was averaging about 28 I think but fuel was cheaper then so it got driven quicker!
Can't see that being much different from any of the VAG ones.
If you're going to be driving slowly everywhere anyway may as well have a small diesel!!

I'm not going to be driving slowly all the time everywhere and I still ideally would like a car that I can attend runs in
The 325 however seems to get maybe 28 driven slowly and then 25-20 when caning in
If I could get something that gives me 35 ish when pootling I would be happy and hopefully so would my wallet
Are the 172's that good then? The figures seem to work for me

Maybe any car on the list, but there are plenty of warm hatch's that will do 35mpg when ragged, Puma 1.7 (39mpg), Early GT TDI, Proton Satria Gti (34mpg), Panda 100HP.The Cupra I had was averaging about 28 I think but fuel was cheaper then so it got driven quicker!

Obviously if you drive like 17 year year old in 2nd gear all the time you won't get 35mpg.
Be fast when you can and economical the rest of the time

This is exactly the point, I know what to expect when on a run or a b road blast and have no issue with that
The issue comes when I am m/waying it down to Somerset or up north then I still see 30 max in the E30
I don't drive everywhere fast I live in London it's not possible, so I want some economy where poss when pootling to the shops etc but still engaging enough for a laugh from time to time
Like the idea of the Clio but have some qualms about the driving position, do like the idea of the focus though

If you were really keen on having a focus then a standard 2.0l is the best option. Suprisingly brisk and will return 40mpg on a run. Have been told by those who have driven both that the st170 just isn't that impressive compared To a 2.0l zetec. Quicker yes but not quick enough to be worth the extra outlay.

I am open to suggestions and I do like Alfas I shall investigate, do you know what the mpg is like?
That's a good shout with the 2.0 focus actually, I hadn't thought about it as I was trying to retain a degree of PH'ness with the 170
I guess I need to sit down and calculate exactly what the BM is achieving and therefore what gains can be made by switching, I just dont think the E30 likes stop/start in traffic or driving round london in general it seems to really drink then, I know most cars will drink more in this scenario but I am assuming a smaller more modern engine will have at least some benefits
