Japan disaster and cars

I'm really not trying to sound insensitive and I really really feel for those caught up in the Japanese disaster, particularly those that have lost friends, family and possessions. It must be hell on earth. At work we have a member of the team who has family over there we've even done a bit of fundraising to send to a charity based in Japan.
However, was just wondering - will the disaster have any effect on the world of motoring?
With Japan being a major car producer, i thought this may be the case.
Called in to see a mate of mine yesterday who works for a Honda dealer and he was saying that Honda in Japan lent their generators to the Japanese government to assist with the crisis, and that Honda Japan had reported losing 1 member of staff to the quake.
Anyone else heard anything similar? I recall issues with Hurricane Katrina wiping out VW's DSG factory a few years back.
Do you think the quake will effect the import of 2nd hand Japanese cars in the coming years too?

A guy from Honda UK was on the news a few days ago. He said that they had plenty of stock in the UK, they had parts on their way from Japan already, and if they were stuck for parts in the future they'd just ship from the US instead. Honda make more cars in the US than in Japan, so all the Japanese sourced parts for the UK factory could be sourced from the US.
I'm sure Toyota, Mitsubishi and the likes will be similar.

One thing my mate did say was that Honda have stopped producing diesel Civics. I really don't believe this.
Apparently it's to make space to build new model Civics - which are only due in 18 months. Seems really crazy if that's the case - surely the body of a petrol and diesel is the same, and the 2.2 diesel Honda unit can go in a Civic or Accord or CRV or whatever - i.e. regardless of the car.
Really can't see there being no new derv Civics registered over the next 18 months, and not convinced that Honda have stocks to last that long if what my mate says is true.

Rumoured to be for MY 12 but haven't seen anything certain. If you look over on www.civinfo.com they will have the latest.
