Can you carry big ass gas cylinders in your boot?

As per title, are you legally allowed to carry one of those long 4.5ft gas canisters in the boot of a saloon car?

2 questions: would that be covered by a normal private insurance policy, and do you need special markings on you car, coupled with a fire extinguisher and anything else?

I'd venture to guess you can carry any cannister you like. What you put inside it may come under scrutiny though...

Content is flammable gas, not sure exactly, maybe propane?

I think there is a legal obligation to have a sticker of contents at the very least, if only to warn others in the event of crash or fire. I'd look into it before jumping in. I wouldn't be suprised if there are some laws regarding this.

For what purpose would you be carrying it?

I'm struggling to imagine that a fire extinguisher would be much use it it goes up.

As far as i know, one cannister is ok if carried upright. There is a limit (4 i think) as to how many can be carried under normal circumstances though.

Would be for refilling on behalf of a business, so take an empty canister, carry it laying down in a closed boot, getting a full canister and transporting it back.

I didn't think a normal private SDP policy would cover that activity, nor a full gas canister in the boot.

You're right about the insurance. A lot of people don't realise this and use their cars for work related stuff - popping out to pick things up etc. They'll be in difficulty if they have an accident and if you get stopped by the Police the more astute officers will check this too.

Most PL policy's for business's have an extension to them that gives RTA cover for employees using their own vehicles on company business whilst being unknowingly not insured. From my recollections the employer has some obligations to ensure Bob has business cover when he uses his car to go and get some extra nails from xyz nail co.

Not many people know this

It doesn't count as 'proper' Insurance though so you will still get in trouble with the plod.
