Sick of seeing half decent motors go to part exchange

I've been considering buying a sheddy motor for a while now (18 months) but having next to no cash slows me down. So I've been relegated to the bargain bucket end of the market.
This leads to new problems, like you have no idea how much of a shed you're lumbering yourself with.
Then, Dave (names changed) turns in with a new car. You get to chatting about it and the deal in general. Turns out he part chopped his old car for £500-£1000. This would have been well in my price range, but having no warning didn't give me chance to talk the missus round to the idea that a cheap Carina/Fiesta/306 would be the answer to all our problems.
In summary then, would you offer your old car round your workmates/acquaintances after you got your part ex valuation? Not to try and screw more cash out of them, just to let someone get a car with verifiable history at a reasonable price, rather than just giving it away to the dealer who will probably scrap it.

Not unless someone had told me they were looking for something around whatever price range.

Quite the opposite. Even get neighbours, relatives, friends and folks who ask me for first refusal on my cars. Rarely have to advertise them and have not part exchanged a car against a new one for over forty years.

The last such sold car, recently bought unseen from a correspondent I met once years ago who recently had his car stolen. I mentioned I had a Rover 45 ( with the "they all do that" cylinder head gasket only they don't ) which may suit and he bought it blind, unseen over the phone on my say so. Met him at the railway station and away he went. Is delighted with the car. He works for BMW by the way ... Now there's a thing ...

I have confidence in my cars but, there's always a first time.... if that ever comes about, I'll sort it one way or another.

Everyone part exchanges their car for a reason. Often times the reason is there is something wrong, or about to go wrong with it, especially cars around £1000 or less. They probably just don't want the hassle of selling to a mate and then something going wrong.

I sold our last car to our neighbours who required a replacement at the time. He paid the trade in price and was very happy as he knows how I look after my cars.

I did explain that if it blew up, I could not be held responsible etc etc and he promised me there would be no come back etc etc. Told him to have a full inspection done in case but he chose not to.

He has had the car over two years now and it hasn't missed a beat.

Well worth the gesture imho.
