Comfortable runaround - what to buy?

Hi guys,

I am in need of a run around for when I don't want to take the number two car out and about. I want something really nice and comfortable, not too slow but it need not be fast either. I am looking at about £4k. I was looking at C-class coupes and there are a few about but rust issues worry me! What else is there instead? Audi A3 is one, BMWs I don't want (just not me) and I am a bit stuck for other small and luxury cars. It is only a run around and I don't need a lot of space. The golfs and focus etc don't really hit the mark because they are really not that comfortable...

Ford Mondeo Ghia X? You could get a really nice one for that kind of money.

How about a Lexus IS200/300 or Jag X-Type?

They are all fairly big 5 door saloons. The lexus is comfy enough but the fords are really not so much - would favour a focus were i going that way...

Very comfy, lovely V6 note, cracking bargains.Hell, this one's even in a modern colour with Contemporary spec so hasn't got too much of the pipe and slippers image either.
You won't find better for 4K

No. But the fact that 'Dave down the pub' thinks it will makes it a bargain.

I had a similar era 147Gta which was far more reliable than the Audi TT it replaced.

Just avoid the selespeed boxes, as they can go wrong, and be aware that while the V6 sounds like nothing else on earth, it does love a drink.

Saab 9-5. Seats of the Gods, and if you go for the Aero then 30+MPG but still 250bhp.

Rover 75? They go for pennies at the moment. You could have two good ones for your budget.

Volvo? C70 - neat coupe, V70 - stylish & practical, S70 - bargain basement saloon. All with 5-cyl soundtrack.

Depends on your definition of comfort; all have great seats, but ride is on the firm side.

BMW 530d E39 , I'm not a BMW person at all, but after being convinced, I bought one, and am loving it so far. Huge amount of car for the money.

OP says no to BMW, and I understand; but I love my 528i - I think e39s (and e34s) transcend the 'BMW driver' image now. They are simply great cars and great value.
