getting wiper scratches out of windscreen?

Got scratches on the windscreen from a previous cheapskate owner using cheap wiper blades.

Tried one of the ebay 12 quid kits but its not much cop

Is there anything else to try?

Cutting compound maybe?

I imagine it takes a very agressive compound to remove scratches from glass. There are companies that specialise in repairing scratched glass (from cars, shop windows etc.) that offer a mobile service - no idea how much they charge but I'd be interested to know as my windscreen has a few scratches on it aswell. It may just be cheaper to buy a new windscreen!

Silver polish? Jewellers' Rouge (not the makeup stuff!)?

Remember that in getting out the scratches you are thinning the toughened glass and thus weakening it so there is an increased risk of eventual failure.

If you can feel it with thumbnail, I doubt if any amount of compound & elbow grease will shift it....

I have a mate who works for Autoglass and asked him about this for my car and he said don't bother. To have it done by someone will cost you more than the £60 (or so) excess for a new windscreen and to do it yourself is a painstaking process.

He recommended a brick.

Yup, new windscreen will be a lot less hassle, and probably expense, and will be a guaranteed good result. I paid for a new one without going through the insurance and it was £120 fully fitted. The windscreen guy was a bit scary though; he explained to me what happened when cheques he'd been paid with bounced - he'd go and take the windscreen back. But he'd wait until it was raining.

Just out of interest, is this a heated windscreen (Mondeo etc?) I only ask because Ranger Rovers seem to be really susceptible to scratching too, and they have heated screens.

some wiper marks can be polished, but the deeper/more prominent marks will potentially leave you with distortion in the glass
