Selling a car - does this sound iffy?

I've had some dialogue with someone asking about buying my Landie... this is his latest email;

Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the paypal fee/charges on this transaction and if you don't have an account with paypal its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to www.paypal.com. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for it once payment clearsand they will get it to my son's location safely . So i look forwardto hear from you soon.

Definitely a scam.

If you fancy fking them about, tell them you're not comfortable with the proposed solution and that they should Paypal the money to the son, who can then bring cash.

Guaranteed you'll get some excuse about why that's not possible.

It shouted SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM. They all seem to start with that wording.

By the way, just so you know, it is a scam.

Had a similar thing a couple of weeks ago when I advertised a guitar on the website of a local free ads paper. Got an email from someone living about 80 miles away to say he liked it and was willing to pay the asking price, would send a cheque and someone would collect when it had cleared. I replied to say ok fine and received a reply to say he would send the cheque soon.

I then smelt a rat and messaged him again to say sorry, I have decided this sale is to be cash only. Heard nothing until a few days later; a message to say he had sent the cheque. So I replied, repeating my earlier message and asking for his address so that I could return his cheque.

Have heard nothing since. But last week, I recieed an empty envelope in the post!

That's a definite scam. When selling a car this is how it goes:


"Hello, I'd like to come look at your car please"

"Ok"

• test drive*

"Great, few niggles, will you take x pounds less than the advertised price?"

"Yeah ok"

"Ok, lets go to the bank and sort out the money."
