Saw my first glowing red brake disk today, on a diesel vectra...
Was going up ellon road towards balmedie giving someone a lift. Was behind the vectra as we went into the NSL and I dropped a gear and started preparing to pass. But as I do this I notice he seems to be booting it hard but not gaining much speed. And whenever he changed gear his car would swerve a little to the right.
I eventually got safely past going down a unlighted bit of dualler. And as I pulled alongside I noticed his rear disk was bright bloody red, he's either driving about with the bandbrake partially on or his caliper is fookered.
How the hell does someone not notice this?! I've not been driving long (under a year) but I notice every little detail on how the car drives and if it's not right.
Surely someone who has been driving many years ( he looked 50 or so) would notice this? I despair...

He was driving along a NSL dual carriageway. With two roundabouts beforehands and plenty of places to stop, maybe he had noticed, but if it's biting to the point where it moves the car when off throttle it shouldn't be moving at that speed if at all.
And I did what I could without looking like I was going to mug him and without crashing.
Flashed hazards once I was infront of him, by the time I got beside him there were no road lights and it's kind of hard to mouth 'excuse me sir your rear caliper is dticking' in the pith black of night.

He must know - I had a sticking calliper on my Astra back when I was on L plates, and I noticed! I could tell there was a loss in power, but the smell was a dead give away. That, and the smoke that poured out when I pulled up at a junction!
Even when we greased the pistons to see if that would work, it was still sticking a bit and I saw the disc glow red hot after half an hour or so of driving. I remember feeling the heat on my leg as I walked past the wheel!
Like someone else said, he was probably just trying to get the thing home.
