Hire a Mustang for US holiday?

What is the best/cheapest way to hire a Mustang/Challenger for a 2 week holiday in the US this summer? Any past experiences?

I'd use Hertz as they seem better at providing what you want from their 'fun collection' than other providers.

If you do get a Mustang when you get to the check in desk as for the newest one available otherwise they might try and fob you off with the old V6 which is a load of rubbish.

I did this - booked online and turned up to collect my "Mustang". After 22hrs straight awake, I couldn't be bothered to argue but it turned out the small print said "or equivalent" so I was lumbered with a Hyundai Sheetee or somesuch, for two weeks in Florida. Bah.

Hertz. Book a midsize and upgrade when you get there and can choose from stock. Booking a Mustang didnt work - they tried to give me a POS Seibring.

Just order a stock car and then see what they have when you get there. Charm helps too. We upgraded to this:



For something minimal like £20 a day.

We are just back from a driving trip round Florida and we hired a Mustang from Hertz. They do state "or equivalent" but this time we are lucky as on one trip we ended up with a Sebring which drove like a blancmange on wheels. I did notice this time that it was a bit older than previous cars but I guess this is down to Hertz extending the replacement cycle due to the recession. A few years ago we were offered a Shelby as an upgrade and it was fantastic - you can't beat a trip down the keys with the roof down. Enjoy!

PS Be careful they don't try and shaft you with extra insurance/sat nav when you arrive and take pictures of the car when you pick it up (although they didn't inspect it that closely when we returned it). We were charged for a "SatRadio" when we got home although they did refund this when I complained.

Personally, I'd rent a crew-cab pickup. Height of an SUV, but cheaper to rent. Means you can see things you can't normally see when in car - over other cars, barriers etc. And great fun in the wet too ;-)

A good tip (as in giving the person on the other side of the counter a few $$) when at the check in works in USA. It's how they work over there, I've been upgraded to a suite in Vegas for 2 weeks for $100. Cars upgraded in Florida too for a few $$ more.

I hired a Dodge Charger from Hertz in Florida, they were very helpful and got it brought over from another branch. However the engine was a letdown, V6 (2.7 litre I think?) which was weedy and kicked down even under medium acceleration. Took it back after a week and swapped it for a Dodge Nitro (V6 but 3.5l) which was much better, had a fun hoon in that from Busch gardens back to Davenport.

You might be able to track down a Hertz Shelby GT350, that would be awesome.

Thanks for all of the input so far guys, really does seem like a bit of a minefield.

My main intention is to pick up and drop off at a NY airport (Newark/JFK), so hoping for plenty of choice, then to drive the East Coast and also call at Watkins Glen for the NASCAR round in August!

I don't think I would mind a V6 version, but if you choose a charger/mustang I would be worries that I would end up with some awful SUV!
