2001 clio reluctant to start

Hi, I've got an 8v pre-facelift 1.2 clio grande. Sometimes when I try to start it first time it will spin the engine over but it won't fire. If I take the key out and try again, it usually fires up OK second time.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like a immobiliser / key transponder issue. Have you tried changing the battery in the key?
