That happened to someone I know. A metal scaffolding pole came through the car windscreen when it got flicked up by a lorry. She tried to claim on the lorry driver's insurance saying he should have avoided driving over the pole but he wouldn't accept liability.
It's another good reason not to drive too close to the vehicle in front.

My mum had a scaffolding pole come through her windscreen once.

She was in a busy small town centre, the builder's van coming towards her had a pole coming off. Due to parked cars and other traffic there was no way to get out of the way. She was hooting and waving to no avail. She simply stopped as best she could and ducked. The pole came through the screen at head height on her side.

She was shaken but unharmed. Happened in seconds.
