MOT pass! - Shocked!

Just wanted to share..
My E36 318is has just passed its MOT with just a new headlight fuse needed.
This is despite both the ABS & handbrake light being constantly on when the car is parked with ignition off. The ABS doesn't cut in and the traction control doesn't work.
Loose bracket on exhaust but not bad enough to fail. I will still get it replaced anyway.
Also will have oil service.
I bought this last August as my "sensible" commuter car having moved out to Lincolnshire meaning a 62 mile commute each way. I stay over 1-2 nights so it does min. 400 miles per week and sometimes 500 miles per week. It averages around 35 mpg and has been totally reliable over the last 6 months despite the bad winter. I did garage it all through the winter and jet washed it every weekend to get rid of the salt.
Anybody else's car passed their MOTs unexpectedly?

I know the ABS doesn't work but I thought that in itself isn't an MOT failure. Lots of cars don't have ABS and the ABS light only comes on when the handbrake is on. It might just be a faulty sensor. Ditto the traction control.
Everything else was fine, suspension, brakes, tyres etc.. so its not dangerous.
Being a 12 year old car with 113k on the clock I thought it would have more issues.

£300, 14 yr old Alfa 145, sat idle on an army base for 8/9 mths. My E36 318is has just passed its MOT with just a new headlight fuse needed.

Our 1967 Fiat 500, bought in haste from an "enthusiasts", for that read tight old bodger, made the mistake of thinking a 4 month old MOT meant it was anywhere near roadworthy and to be fair I didnt really have an opportunity to start stickign a screwdriver or toffee hammer through the floorpan.
Few Months later, local MOT place condemmed it, they were a little over zealous to say the least, the glee with which the tester pulled it to bits was a little alarming, he has a reputation for it, no leeway whatsoever.
Spent 2 months getting it sorted, welding, apinting, engine out etc etc and was rewarded with a fresh MOT cert, felt like giving an acceptance speech.
Not taken anything back to the original place, way over the top, some of the stuff was justified but pulling it for perfectly adequate welding done ten years ago that has been passed twice since to me suggests he was making a point, so that station has lost probably a grands worth of MOT and tyres since, ok I dont expect a pass when a car isnt right but I dont expect a gloating goon gleefully filling in the fail sheet and telling me to scrap it, basically laughing at us, my wife verging on tears, make a point of driving past there now.

I would be shocked too. Because AFAIK, failed ABS IS an MOT failure.

I am sorry to say that the regulations here are very clear. If there is a problem signalled by the ABS light, then that is an MOT failure. The Testing station would have no discretion at all.
The ABS system will have a special sequence of warning lights when the ignition is switched on to indicate that the system is functioning correctly. That is tested for the MOT. That's interesting to know. I have just installed a tow bar on the Saab but haven't hooked up the electrics yet as I only really tow when I need to drag the dinghy off the beach and a few hundred metres home, so I don't use a light board. Will have to think about hooking that up ks as no mot testers know what's changing in the new year bar 13 pin trailer sockets.
My 9000 sailed through its MOT last week. They changed a number plate bulb, but that was it. Advisories on discs and pads all round, which I had planned on changing this summer anyway. Either way, I was expecting a few things!! Second year of it passing easily. Not bad for a £600 odd stop gap car, which has grown on me

Note I said 13 pin sockets being tested (which is definitely coming in) there's nothing about 7 pin being tested.
