Summer fun, which won't break the bank! What Car, of course.

Okay, SAAB-ey is getting sold this month before MOT is up. Engine is going into an 03 model, which is cool. I'm glad to see the good bits get a new home. Sentimentality over.

So, the plan, then, is to buy a car which has a long MOT and tax, to run over the Summer and into the Winter - whilst finances stabilise to get something a bit newer/shinier. This is the perfect opportunity to buy anything, regardless of impracticality and have some fun driving over the Summer. Win.

Budget £1200. MOT and TAX needs to be at least 6 months, ish. I know this budget will mean most of these cars will be as rough as the proverbial badger's rear. They might be pretty, or very tired. S'all good though, honest. So far we've found:

Land Rovers, as long as they're not FLs.
Jeep Cherokee's 4L V8's with LPG, all that can be considered.

Peugeot 205/309 GTi
'' 106's and 306's too.
Clio Williams
Honda CRX/Civics
XR2/3
SAAB 900 T16

I reckon it'll take some hunting to get one of the above for the £1200. I've been checking insurance and they're all surprisingly cheap (under £1000 if I limit usage), maybe they're not quite as cool amongst young drivers now?

I'm just looking for the usual; suggestions, but maybe if anyone has owned the above which would they think the best for a good Summer car, and maybe something that I can put some miles on, TLC and not lose anything. The last bit is kinda important.

Edited for real answer: For £1200 you could get a pretty kickin' rad Cherokee and some big tyres. Do some greenlaning/muddy field events for funzies, they're great ways to waste time/fuel when the weather's nice

It's got the be the MX5. Your £1200 spending limit should let you get a mechanically fine older model although it'll probably be on the ratty side given the lower end price point. Still, you won't have more fun for the money, and the thrill of cruising about with the roof down is not to be missed!

I'll keep working with an MX-5 idea. Still attracted to an LPG Cherokee, anything V8 and straight through exhaust would be applauded by the neighbours.
