When driving past a speed camera I like slowing down using only engine breaking to hit the required speed (edit: Obviously the camera is just after a 40/30 limit change officer), so to not be one of those people who jumps on the anchors at the last possible second.

Knowing your route well enough that you never have to change lanes (city driving) Door to door. (always using the lane splits/merges and the right position at a junction)

When going through a sagged bit in the road (wider than the car) get off the power and coast through as it feels smoother.

(I'll add something else later on)

I can't be the only one....

No but I do enjoy spotting a lower speed limit in front of me, coming off the throttle in plenty of time and passing the new limit signs at exactly the correct speed. The use of brakes in this situation voids the attempt.

So when driving you never slow down and only speed up?

Can't say i've thought much about what you've put, but...

I do love...

Using the engine to break.

Looking at my car when it's nice and clean in the reflection of windows... I have a favourite junction onto a road where you get a good head on reflection then as you pull out a side on profile!!!!

Ahh, driving smoothly. Something that eludes a lot of drivers wink

Personally I like to drive without using my brakes, the less the better as it generally means I'm reading the road well enough to anticipate changes in traffic flow/hazzards etc.

It surprises me just how many people see a queue of traffic up ahead or a slow moving truck pulling out into the outside lane but continue to accelerate and then slam the brakes on. Why confused

You're not alone. It's the little flourishes that make journeys involving and fun. I'm particularly a fan of using observation to minimise the need for braking. Also when going from a 40 to a 30 with a speed camera ahead, to time it so as to be hitting exactly 30 mph the moment you pass the scamera - not 31, not 29.

I always try to plan ahead and use engine braking, but most of the time you end up with people up your chuff because you haven't put your brake lights on to tell them you're slowing down!

+1 for engine braking!

Coming off a motorway, first thing is drop to fourth with a blip of the throttle, then another blip to bring in third, then one more to bring in second.

Usually i dont need to actually brake for approaching roundabouts, with the slight uphill gradient and engine braking its usually just a little tap on the brakes at the end if i actually need to stop.

there's always the opposite (when there's no-one to hold up of course)... drop to below the speed limit, 2nd gear, choose a point to floor it and don't take your foot off until you've reach the last road marking. Points for getting as close to the limit as possible; points for going over too smile

Because the majority of drivers are incapable of "joined up" driving and, for them, life is one continual series of surprises.

Unfortunately these days there are instances where the correct speed is different to the prevailing speed limit. Where I would define correct as being a speed at which almost all local drivers would select as the natural balance between risk and progress.

My local 40mph dual carriageway being a classic example.

Yep.

I also do this, it does make the journeys much better.. Getting it just right, or looking at the gradient of the hill infront of you and the traffic up ahead and knowing when to back off so you'll stop perfectly.

Engine braking...mmmmm

Got to love the idiots on the outside stamping on their brakes to get to the limit at under Newbridge on the M9 (its a 50), while I just glide effortlessly on the inside; smoother, saving fuel and brake pad wear.
