Yes it's worth it. No mileage is not quite as good, you'll probably lose 10%.
I have a Supercharged Range Rover on LPG, love it. The equivalent LPG is around 25. I get around 14 mpg on LPG, at a cost of 68.9 pence per litre. Not exactly cheap motoring, but worth every penny. Get the joy of a 400 bhp top of the line Range Rover, and run it for a very reasonable amount.

Yes, my 4.2 Jaguar XJ350, is cheaper to run (on fuel) than my Wife's 2.0litre HDi Peugeot.
My previous Jag was converted at 80k, and I sold it .. still running perfectly, and with a tear in my eye 8 years later with 325,00k.
Most cost effective way is to buy a car already converted (and people do tend to hang on to them).
Make sure it's a good conversion.
LPG near me (Beds) is now about 77p a litre .. which I find very high, 26p when I had my first car .. but still cheaper than Petrol !
Re Tax, you can register and save about £10 a year I think .. but I've never done it ! my own laziness.
There is a myth surrounding the London Congestion Zone, being free for all LPG cars. It's not, only a few factory converted or approved cars, and it ends soon anyway.
Re the SUV you are looking at, I have seen a lot of cheap Jeeps, expensive Cayennes .. or a VW Toureg if you have more taste. And from Landrover something for everyones taste/pocket.

Just replaced a very old single point system with a new, snazzy multi point injection system.
Also had two new cylinder heads and a few other bits at the same time.
MPG went from 17 to 23 on gas.
It's the same economy for gas as petrol, makes almost no difference at all. Would definitely have another one, but would have to be a modern, multi point system.
The biggest expense and hassle is the tank and pipework fitting, the 'front end' parts and replacement is relatively cheap, so even if you got an old system, they're fairly cheap and easy to upgrade.
