When oh when will there be compulsory retesting for old drivers?
Have just had an old guy reverse into the side of my car whilst waiting at a zebra crossing in a Tesco car park. Apparently it was my fault for not seeing him reversing
I'm generally pretty relaxed about these things, accidents happen after all and the insurance will sort it out (or write the car off so I can buy a new shed). It just scares me that someone can be left in charge of a potentially lethal piece of machinery when they fail to see a car about 2ft from the back of theirs. I was side on so in no way could have been hidden by blind spots and am just grateful it was my car and not a pedestrian.
According to the staff in store this happens a lot and is nearly always down to the older drivers not spotting other cars.
Anyway, best report this and have a cuppa.

What car was he driving. The view out of our Mondeo on the most modest of inclines is non-existent and often on a wing and a prayer. You should also know that old people find it hard and painful to swivel their necks so will often try and use mirrors and their failing eyesight doesn't help.
So yes, it was your fault and soociety in general and car manfacturers.
What we need is the electric 360 degree transparent bubble for old people. Then again, my 72 year old mother drives a Ford Galaxy which she reverses onto her drive every night rather better than I could. (It's going forward that is the greater risk...)

Or they could just remove all Rovers from the road - this would sort the problem out without overtly discrimintating against the older drivers!
I did about 250 miles on sunday and a lot of it was on A roads and the number of Rovers I had to get past causing mobile chicanes was ridiculous, crawling along at 40 on the open road in good weather.

I live on the Isle of Wight, a floating old people's home just of the south coast. The average age of island residents is 176. I see lots of bad driving here and most of it isn't done by OAPs. I'd put new drivers below 25, women with kids in the car of any age and blokes driving people-carriers as all being worse drivers than the average pensioner.
You're better off blaming the fact you were in a supermarket carpark, the mecca for bad drivers, rather than the age of your assailant. Just stay away from supermarkets!

He could be right, if he had started the maneuver before you pulled up at the crossing. Bet you were watching the crossing and not all around you.[/rant]

Had a similar issue a few weeks back - old duffer reverses his crossover van thing into the Elan while I was waiting as a pedestrian crossing in a Morrisons (classy!) car park. Apparently it was my fault because my car is too low - but it's still taller than a small child you ***kwit!

I reckon we've all been there, when you start to reverse and a car suddenly appears, not criticizing the OP but hazard awareness etc. If you were already at the crossing stationary and he just reversed back into you, he's a twonk whatever age he is.mercfunder said:

I do generally find watching the road ahead more useful that keeping vigilant for cars in parking spaces, so yes I was looking at the crossing.2 sides to every story.
Even if he had started to reverse before I stopped at the crossing he still would have been entering the path of my vehicle, the only difference being that I could have avoided an accident.

Seriously? A stationary car waiting for people to cross in front of him should have been looking out for a duffer backing in to him from the side? This is reminding me of the old joke about the lamp post jumping out in front of a drunk driver. 2 sides to every story.

Lol, did the highway code change recently? Since when people pulling out have right of way over the main road traffic?2 sides to every story.

You're right, and it drives me nuts when I'm slowly reversing out of a space and have visibly travelled 6 feet into the carriageway, and people then drive around me and glare at me for not knowing they were there. I had a Taxi do this when I had already crossed the centre line on a local High Street - realised after swearing loudly about his driving skills that both my windows were open to improve hazard perception, and so was his window! Perhaps he should have waited rather than racing around me, which involved crossing to the far side of the road for him.2 sides to every story.
I have a preference for parallel parking or online shopping wherever possible.

Drivers joining a Motorway or Dual Carriageway apparently have the right of way over traffic in the nearside lane. I don't know when this change came about but seemingly it's mandatory to yield, if you don't then it's permissible for the 'joining' driver to then tailgate you along with the compulsory flashing headlights.Forums | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
